blower motor intermittant

I have a 97 318i. The blower motor goes on and off at will. Someone said it could be a blower motor resistor? Anyone else encounter this?

Had similar on my 1993 325is...
The fan only ran on setting 4 - high.
On 1,2,3 it was intermittant.
I brought it to the dealership and told them the story. Their response is it was a common problem. The resistor thing was replaced.
