Silverado Reg. cab.

What do you guys think of this idea. Ok, as most of you know, I melted my Silverado body in gas the other day. The bed is beyond use, but the cab, I think I can save it. So I dremeled out the Ext. cab part and made it a reg cab. I just need a little bit of putty. My idea is to make it one serious rock crawler with everything but like the cab scratch made. The chassis, just about everything. I'll also use maybe a Chevy Vortec motor that I have, and stuff. What do you guys think? I can't post pics right now. I will ASAP though.

oh thye memmories. I built a bad ass rock crawler, my most bad ass model ever. Just, didnt have the quality as they do now. I bought revells 1997 Ford F-150 X-Cab, and stripped it down, ripped fenders off, removed bed, cut frame down, made a 4 link rear end, used a solid axle with coils up front, made a tubular cage around the engine, and it rode on 44" ground hawgs.

I have that Revell kit. I burned it!
I don't know when I'll be able to start it though. I don't have any putty. I'll keep you all posted.

Sounds great, just try and make it a clean rock crawler, i cant stand seeing redneck rockcrawlers, (old trucks with parts ripped off and dented, called rock crawlers) i cant stand an ugly rock crawler... Nice and clean lookin is the way to go, and when your done, you should make a diorama for it, just some big rocks glued to some wood, that would make it look 100 times better, just remember to put beadlocks on it!

I hate banged up rock crawlers too. I'm going to try my best and make it as cool, and neat as possible.

well, if your going to build a "clean" rock crawler, you might as well build it from scratch (like i am currently doing).

I want to try and keep the Silverado shape though. Have the body, then maybe some tubing here and there, and a nice suspension etc. No windows, things like that.

Your idea is exactly like what i did to a 4Runner. Cut the roof off the back, shortened the rear by a scale foot and did a SAS. I also cut off the doors, make a custom front bumper out of styrene (Like an ARB bumper) and added a roll cage, but it still looks like crap. I'll fix it when i have some skills. Ill try to take a picsome day

Sounds like a good idea, btw, Eugene, the engine that comes with the silverado ext. cab is a Vortec 6000, 6.0L 367cubic inch big block v8, with the 4l60e 4spd automatic transmissions, so, maybe some headers and a custom intake tube with filter, and you'll have yourself a 400hp motor.

I don't know what to do with the motor yet. I want to make a really wicked set up, but I don't know what kind of things I could put in it. I don't know much about newer motors. I've rebuilt older motors with carbs and stuff, but none of the new ones. I've been looking at aftermarket websites and stuff for ideas.

use the motor you have and if you have to, make some headers outta trees, I'm sure if you look at jegs.com, and search for big block chevy headers you'll get an idea of how to make them. Also, search for an intake for that year, model truck 99 silverado 1500 V8 6.0L., That's all you really need, and open headers on that motor with aintake tube and filter=big hp.

Actually its a 5.3 Vortec 327. How about an LS1? Saw a Jeep rock crawler with an LS1.

I thought that the Escalades, Denalis, and Silverado SS had the 6.0, and the others had the 5.3. I'm confused.

No, Eugene any silverado from the 1500 to the 3500 are available with any engine from the 4.8L v8, the 5.3L v8, and the 6.0L v8, these are all big blocks. Motors available in the suburban are the 6.6 diesel and the 8.1 496 v8, big blocks. Mike just don't know what he's talking about.

The biggest engine in a suburban is the 6.0 V8. The Silverado has the diesel and the 8.1 L as options in some configurations (HD?).
My question is why put a huge engine in a rockcrawler? Horsepower just breaks parts in real life. There are time i wish i had the v6 just so i could stand on it and not break anything. Mud and sand takes huge engines, but rocks needs low gearing, lockers, flex and sticky tires.

Yeah, you don't need much power when you are rock crawling, but its just cool. Since its not real and you aren't going to break any parts, why now just make it have a bunch of power, and just that cool factor? hehe

Yeah that's why the 6.0L V8 that comes with this truck would be perfect. Eugene, I have some pics of this particular motor, with a air tube and filter, and a set of headers, I'll upload em in a bit.
****I meant in the suburban you can have the 6.0 or the 8.1, and the silverado you can have the 6.6 diesel.

I just checked. It doesn't have the 6.0. It even says in the kit that its a 5.3. I don't know where you got that it was a 6.0.
86_SR5
11-01-2003, 09:52 PM
Eugene, if the motor was a 5.3, it would have the more rounded style air plenum top, the 6.0 has the rectangular version, as come with the kit. Keep in mind these were the 99-00 style's. Now, I Believe they're all completely rounded. Nonetheless, the 5.3 and 6.0 are both strong torquey motors. Perfect for makin loads of torque and hp at low rpm's, which is a very good thing for a rock crawler.

Ok, fine. I'll just take your work for it.
Progess on it, I have part of the chassis made now and I have the body kind of fitted together. I just need some putty to bring it all together.

Eugene, what are you using for your front axle, & driveshaft?
EMAXX
11-02-2003, 03:31 PM
I don't know yet. I found a pretty nice one in my parts box from a 95 Chevy truck. I also have an Impala front end that would work pretty nicely. I'm not sure yet. I want locking diffs. but I dont' have any, so I'm going to have to scratch build those.
86_SR5
11-02-2003, 03:34 PM
My advice is to use some solid 9'' ford diff's and if you gotta, use trees for the axle's.
EMAXX
11-02-2003, 04:14 PM
I don't want to use any ford parts. I know that they are the best diffs and stuff, but its a Chevy truck for crying out loud. Anyways, I'll keep you guys posted on what I do.

tisk tisk tisk. Eugene!! What the hell are you thinking, for one lets say you want all GM, ok, gm 15 bolt posi diff's, known for your axles flying out under hard acceleration. My cutlass, and my SS both had 9'' ford's. Best posi diff you can get, Curry makes some nice ones.
