97 4wd fuse blowing

The 25 amp fuse (#24 in the fuse block) blows immediatly when I push the 4wd button. I tried pulling the diagnostic codes from the TCCM, but there are none, (possibly the blown fuse won't let it store codes).

Anybody else had this problem? Thanks

Greg

I was told it is the actuator. I just bought one on ebay. I will keep you posted.

My 96 did the same thing. It turned out being a shorted actuator, which blew the fuse everytime i tried to engage 4WD. took it to the dealership, and $250 later left with a brand new actuator, harness, and fuse.

My 96 truck is also doing this , blows the fuse as soon as you put it in 4wd..did the acutator work for you?

I am having the same problem with my 96 2 door. I can put the truck into 4 high and then 4 low but when it comes to taking it out of 4x4 it starts to blow fuses. I have replaced the button on the dash and encoder motor on the transfer case. The actuator on hte front axle will not cause the fuse to blow because the transfer case need to shift into 4x4 before the actuator even thinks about moving. Your problem is prob the encoder motor or the switch. Let me know what works for you because i am about ti rip every wire out of my truck!!!

My bet would be on the front axle actuator, front axle switch or the wiring, The transfer case motor is powered by the Tcase fuse and once the motor gets the tcase in the right mode the switch contacts close and sent power from the 4WD fuse to the front axle actuator and switch

Do you have the newer style front axle actuator(plastic one) or the old metal thermal actuator? I can't think of how you could blow out the 4WD fuse while going to 2HI unless it was the plastic actuator
