2001 ECM Codes

I believe this was already covered, but just to confirm...

I can NOT check the ECM codes on my 2001 V6 by using the dash lights, I must use a code reader -- right?

You mean PCM, & yes you need at least a code reader{toy}, but it's like working with one hand tied behind your back. Using a scanner allows you to monitor streaming data & this is what you need to do propper diag work.

Any idea what a scanner's worth? They are universal with all other OBD II equiped cars, right?

Depends on the level you buy. I just got a AUTOXRAY-5000 that has all cables OBD1,OBD2, for $395.00. Cheaper with only specific cable, but face it you cant do without it anymore. Can't do as much as a TECH2, but also dosnt cost $2500.00, &
I'm not going to be responsible for borrowing it from work.

OK Unfortunate for me I can not afford to buy that toy. So I think I'll have to do it the old fashion way - Trial and Error.

One more thing though... Once I do find the problem and fix it, will the computer find that it is now within the tolerances again and clear the engine light? Or do I need to reset the computer.

On my 87 Corvette (which is OBD I) I have to reset the computer (disconnect battery)to clear the codes but the service engine light will automatically turn off. Is it the same for OBD II computers?
Will removing battery power reset the OBD II? Or must I use a scanner to reset the computer codes?
