my 98 z28 convertable has a few issues. just purchased it a month ago. the interior lights dont work when to switch is turned on nor when the doors are ajar. also the factory alarm dose not go off when set and the door is manually unlocked and opened.
one other more important issuse is the cooling fans never come on and the car will overheat if I let it. Once the other day I heard them shitch on for about a second and then shut off again.
I don't know where to start. I have checked all the fuses that I know of. I there a hidden fuse somewhere? I have a isuzu npr that has a hidden fuse behind the dash that blew once. could this be the same?
please help anyone. :banghead:

Dude, goto www.chevytalk.com You will not get any help here.
Anyway, on the interior lights and such. Did you check BOTH fuses on the inside of the car? Some are located in the dash and the rest are next to the motor. When you say it will overheat, does it go past 230? What if you turn on your AC? One fan is to automatically come on when the AC is turned on. Was this car in an accident before???

Thanks for the info.. I don't think the car has ever substained any big damage. and no the temp has never gone past 230 but I have always got nervous when it approches 230 or more.

OK, I was just curious. Sometimes the gauges are off a little. You should check the water sensors and stuff. Maybe insert a mechanical gauge to see what it really runs at.

You could always go with an aftermartket fan controller to solve the fan problem and deal with the interior lights later. I have a lot of cooling FAQs on my page www.dccontrol.com (look in the tech section) and have installed the variable speed controller on my 96 LT1, very stable temps.

for the cooling fans you probably just have to replace the relays under the hood...look under the hood and find a relay that is the same as the one for the cooling fan(in terms of current in and switch voltage), take it out and replace the cooling fan relay with it(make sure its a non-essential system that works, generally the a/c one works well) and let the car run...if the fan turns on you know that all you need is a new relay

first thing frist, turn on the A/C and verify that your fans work, they do burn up, and do fail. if you turn on the A/C and they dont turn on, there is a problem betwen the two somewhere, if they do turn on, then check your fan switch on the side of the block. and the relay like chevyracingcamaro said. but dont worry about 230, id be more worried if it got close to 260. my RS runs close to 220 on a regular basis. as far as the internal lights, good luck, hope you have a test light, and a schematic of the wiring diagram, and are very familiar with gutting the interior of a car. if you arent confident that you can disassemble the whole interieor, including the dash, i definately say bite the bullet, and take it to a chevy dealership to have the problem fixed. because chances are you are going to have to chase the whole wiring harness and look for a chafed wire, or a burned connector, or something of the like. and trust me, its not a fun job. good luck
