Hi, I am buying a 1986 Dodge Caravan with the 2.6L I4 engine for $400 from a friend. He moved away months ago, and we don't have the keys for it. How can I try to hot wire the van so I can verify it's running condition before buying it? Thanks.

if you are gonna hotwire a car then that means you are going to steal it and i aint supporting car theft

Of course, since that is the only time anyone would ever want to hot wire a vehicle! Seriously though, if I locked my keys inside and someone gave me advice on how to use a coat hanger to get in, that wouldn't mean that they are necessarily (sp?) helping a car theft. Same situtation. Hot wiring a car isn't illegal... hot wiring someone elses car is though.
Is there anyone that can help me out or direct me somewhere that can? thanks

If your your being truthful, you do have a couple of options. If the van is worth it, call a locksmith. Secondly, remove your steering wheel and remove your ignition key. Any library will have a book on this procedure. It takes abit of time but can be done quite easily. If you can't be bothered with this, you might get more time than you expected.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check out locksmith prices and if still too much then give the work a try on a warm day.

Go to SE DC ask any 9 year old how. One got mine in about 60 seconds.
