Does anyone know what a blinking Overdrive-Off light means in a 99 Explorer 4WD, Automatic? Anything to be immediately concerned about? It comes on about once per day and will go off if you shut off the engine and restart it.

This may be the begining of a tranny problem. The same thing happened to me. I took it to the dealer and they said it was running hot and suggested flushing the transmission fluid. I have 128,000 miles on this truck, (96 V8) and since I've done this, no more blinking light and it's running great.

It has a 5R55E transmision. These have a history of having problems with the valve body gaskets. I found a number of my valve body bolts loose in my 97 and I bought a 99 transmission with only 52K for parts with the VB gasket blown out and loose bolts. This problem with the VB gaskets has been widely reported. Bolts tighten to about 9 ft-lb which is just a good hand twist. OD, low engine braking and reverse are a couple of areas that can be affected. Seems to be a problem on this model because they had to get creative with bolt spacing. Just a warning if you ever drop the pan to change the filter.

This happened on my '95. It meant that there was an error code thrown, which was readable off the computer, and that the trans had gone into "limp home mode". If you notice that shifts are harsh when that light's on it's because it's trying not to eat itself. Might want to plug in a code reader and see what's up.

I've got a '95 Explorer 4x4 6cyc AT with 112k. I was driving home (3 miles) accidently in 2nd instead of D on the automatic. Suddenly the OD light started blinking and it would clunk when the rpm's hit 1000 or so at the stop signs. I removed the neg battery cable and let the system reset. It seems to work fine for now - I'll report any additional problems if they occur.
