Air Conditioner Problem on 91 Ranger

new to forum.
On my 91 Ford Ranger XLT, most times when I start up, the AC wont kick on until I go over a bump and then it turns on. Now I thought something was probably loose, but I had a mechanic look at it about 4 times and he cant find out what's causing it. Also, the Altanater (sp.?) went out and I had it replaced, he thought it may have been that, because of the truck only using what it has to to run, but even after i replaced it, i'm having the same problem still.
any help would be appreciated. thank you.
