are you talking about your dash speedo/tach or other ie boost, f/a gauges?

Ebay is the cheapest place for gauges. They will have red ones, the only thing you have to make sure is that the gauges are just like your stock ones (redline, max speed, etc.) I bought my gauges from ebay and they are sweet.

Just get Autometers with whatever face color you want and stick a bulb condom on the bulb in the back.

I got mine off ebay and they look pretty nice, especially at night.

don't worry about colors for those gauges, go with performance. use a GReddy boost gauge. i have only heard scarry stories about all other boost gauges being inaccurate and not reading properly resulting in unnecessary damage...
i guess i'm tryin to say don't sacrifice perfomance for rice ;)

Nothing wrong with Autometer, you'll pay out the ass for a Greedy one, but either will work fine.

You have heard scary stories about 'all other boost gauges' ? well, GReddy must be the only working boost gauge company I guess. Choosing a color that matches your car isn't rice, its not having an ugly multi-colored interior.

I wish people who had no idea about things wouldn't open their cakeholes. Pay 120bucks for a boost gauge if you care about the name. A frigging 30 dollar VDO works just as well.

i'm just sayin i saw an autometer gauge read 4 psi lighter than the actual boost pressure reading from an electronic boost controller. i don't mind paying a little more for a high quaility part. if i were to pay 30 for a part, i would exect it to act like a 30 dollar part... but that's just my opinion... ;)

In which case it was probably a kinked hose, RANDOM faulty gauge, or a improperly installed tap.
I have a 45 dollar gauge that is dead on, and FWIW I have seen Apex-i gauges that read -2 when the car is off....those are 110 apiece.

I have heard people say that the guage faces are sometimes inaccurate depending who you get them from. Run into any problems?
LandoAWD
10-24-2003, 06:23 PM
The thread starter was looking for stand alone gauges, however in response to your statement, the aftermarket faces are only as reliable as you make them. Mark where your needles were and you shuldn't have problems.

when i buy parts i try to research the subject and find out what product performs the best, has had the least problems, etc. i found out that GReddy boost gauges were at the top of the list, and i heard things about apex'i, and autometer (and in that case the gauge was not very new, so that may have been a factor). this is not to say i don't use those brands for other parts; i have an autometer F/A ratio gauge right below my boost gauge, and an apex'i downpipe. for myself, i don't mind throwing down the cash for parts that i have found to be "better", and i have always felt that "cheaper" parts are inexpensive for a reason... also the guy i'm workin with to tune my ride is the same guy that Injen chose to testbed their turbo intake that most of us use, and he is one of the most knowledgeable dsm tuners on the block... just some thought

If you do reserch before getting stuff for your car then why did you get the Autometer "light-show" rice A/F gauge, its a waste no matter what the cost.

ok you got me on the light show, i needed another gauge for the space and didn't want to pump out the cash for an EGT, so i ended up with the F/A. i'm using an electronic boost gauge, and as far as apex'i goes, for the $$, it just ain't worth it cuz i got the profec b spec 2 for peak hold, warning etc...

I have been looking for gauges and don't want to pay for something that is just the name while i can get something else that works just as well and also has style. C2 is just way out of hand Greddy, possibly, but for now i am just going to get a boost gauge so any help on other gauges would be greatly appreciated.
Also autometer are they any good what is the difference? Pros...Cons.

You can replace the bulb in an Autometer Phantom gauge with a bulb of a different color or a LED replacement. That lets you have whatever color on a cheap gauge, if that's what you're looking for.

does a cheap gauge actually do the job? I am with boostedspyder on if its cheap the product isn't made so well and liable to break or work improperly...just wondering if this is how it is with gauges?

If expensive meant it worked better, the Ultra-Lite would have a bad reputation, which they don't. There is nobody that recommends the $300 boost gauge because of the 'double reverse EL lunar carbon fiber switchblade gauge with ultra-variable peak/hold shift light'.

Well what i am thinking of getting now is the Greddy boost gauge and possibly a cheap A/F just to "rice" it up a bit, i will wait on an EGT until i actually need it, or should i get an oil pressure gauge, will they show if your low and how is their accuracy?
Saw this OBX one on ebay can anyone tell me if its a good buy?

Oil pressure is exactly what it says, pressure. Not level. Now if your level is so low that the pickup tube is slurping like a straw then yes, the pressure will fluctuate. Again, the more reputable gauge makers (autometer Ultra Lights are my personal choice) are more accurate than say the one you buy at autozone.

I have an Autometer Phantom Ultra-Lite...I have had no problems with it. I think I paid about $75 for it and there is no need to buy a different bulb. The autometer I bought came with 3 different "bulb condoms" (they are little rubber thingies that you slide over the bulb to change it's color)

I like my shit to match as far as lights goes except for my tach for some reason the different color makes me pay better attention. every thing is indiglo green except my tach which is arrest me red. :2cents: but, saw these kickass faces with naked chic silouettes that I want. I know thats kind of lame, but I like it. I can't remember who puts these out. I personally don't give a hoot who makes my gauges as long as they are accurate and reliable while I'm running.

right now i have a GReddy Boost/Vac and an autometer Phantom F/A ratio. the GReddy has green backlit #'s with a red needle and warning line [like the redline on a tac]. the autometer flips from red over to green, so they complement eachother nicely in the lighting department.

i'm a Loan Officer heavily involved in Southern California Real Estate, mostly people with bad credit. i do refinancing and purchases. great $$ and long hours. right now i'm working around 12 hour days. i run a telemarketing room at night and work on my deals all day. i average 3% commission for every deal i close and they are usualy some where around $400,000, which is about 8-10 grand a pop after my split with the broker. unfortunatly i'm horrible with $$, lol and right now i have been in somewhat of a trough :( but i got a handfull of deals in the works, so next month should be great.
i have had my car for almost a year, although 80% of the work got done in the first 7 months. it was stock when i got it. i have found there are 4 major areas of customization you can apply.
1. engine / drivetrain / fuel
2. suspension
3. soundsystem
4. dressup / cosmetic
in my experience thus far, i would have focused all on the engine [save for the soundsystem i got, everything minus subs], and not so much on the rims/suspension untill i had the engine done right. all i really need for it now is an upgraded turbo and a SAFC and injectors for some serious power gains and i could have had that done long ago if i would have focused only on that.

Damn...the military sure won't be paying me that much, not even as an officer, just hope a civi job in automotive engineering will get the job done, be a while for that happens.
You have an injen intake, whats the size of it...would it be good to get one that takes out the 2G MAS with a GMAF30, but then you also have to spend a lot of cash on 2G MAF Translator. Is it worth the cash? or just keep the Stock 2GMAS? I am planning on getting the Greddy Type S BOV with UICP, but that won't be for a while, so i need an intake that will go with the stock BOV and later be able to switch to the Greddy Type S BOV.
also am looking at getting this A/F gauge, how does it look to you (Autometer Phantom)

About your car though. I wouldn't worry about switching out the mas unless you are thinking about some serious power upgrades. My injen intake is beautiful and fits my EVOIII like a charm. now all I have to do is get the bastard installed! Hope you get everything together. Good luck with the ride.

Ehh well technically not officer....yet, i have another year of Military Academy then i will be. Army--wanting aviation to be a chopper pilot, have to see the grand Order of Merit List goes first. Whats your branch and where at overseas?
All right glad to hear about the MAS, saves up quite a sum of money that i can put into the UICP and BOV then, with the injen intake do i need the one with the aftermarket BOV extension or stock, for a Greddy Type S BOV. How easy is the BOV to install yourself? For the UICP should i go with buying the S pipe and L pipe separately or in one package deal?

With the injen you will want the one with stock BOV. it works with the stock, type-s and 1g bov's. I believe the aftermarket ones are angled differently. So if you're running the type-s (myself and boostedspyder love them... nobody else does for some reason) you'll want the stock BOV return. the best price for the injen that I've found was on prostreetonline.com Have a look on there for everything you are lookin into.
Good luck with the academy. and don't be a typical prick officer! I hate brass... no offense.
