Have you ever tried going fast in reverse?

In the late 80's when in college my buddies and I would get in his car and he would drive backwards down the street just for kicks. It was hilarious to see the looks on peoples faces as we were backing down the street. The excursions would only last about a quarter mile and we never got caught by the cops but this crazy but fun.

Yeah, that's great fun. You get this high pitched reverse whine, and it's just like rear-wheel steering, it's all touchy and stuff. Great fun! :D:D

its pretty easy to roll it driving in reverse isnt it?
like if you flick the steering wheel to quick one way?
when i do go backwards fast (just for fun, as you say) i try not to turn the wheel to much, it just feels weird, like its going to tip :)

Too bad the speedo does not read in reverse. I managed to hit boost in the skyline but that was enough as the tyres just lit up and well I quit hahaha

At first, I thought my speedo didn't work in reverse, but when i was driving backward once, my passenger said, "oh cool, the speedometer works in reverse."...
That was the most pointless post ever.

My speedo works in reverse too. It's all mechanical, maybe that makes a difference?

hmmm ::pondering::
my 89 integra is geared longer in reverse than it is in 1st
4.21 final drive
3.00 reverse gear
195/60R14 tires
7500 rpm fuel cutoff
that means i could go about 41mph in reverse if i take it to the rev limiter :)

Hummm I never noticed it much on the Skyline but since it is an electronic pickup I only assumed. See I should know better. Ok next time I will have a quick peek.
Not sure on the gearing but I was doing well over 30mph in reverse

Only went fast in reverse once. My buddy was reversing fast in his Mazda 626 standard, we were going pretty fast and he turned the wheel a bit and you could feel one whole side of the car come off the ground
I dont have the balls to go fast in reverse, especially when my car is soo big I find it hard to control in reverse. Going any amount of speed backwards in a smaller car or truck always feels tipsy to me.
As a gag, my friends bought me one of those kits for a truck for backup sirens, and I was "supposed" to put it in my car. Its still in my room, never to be put in. :bloated:

I always used to drive fast in reverse in my Renault 19 as a teen but stopped when I lost control and went straight through my nieghbour front fence and in to his flower-bed.:(

I often back out of parking spaces quickly and what not, but I don't go out of my way to go really fast in reverse. I don't like the sound my standard tranny makes in R...

I bet I can win the most useless post award by stating the fact that the world record for the highest speed attianed in reverse by a production car is the Lamborghini Diablo which was able to do 66 mph, which is roughly 110 km/h.

your skyline is probably more stable at speed in reverse than my integra
the skyline being effectively "front wheel drive" at that point

I don't think so. Every try and plant that kind of power when boost comes on in reverse? That car is a handful driving forwards let alone in reverse with any enthusiasum. Not to mention there is no real weight value on the rear tyres as it is, let alone with the weight is transferred even more to the front while reversing.

hehe, i was thinking the same thing.. i was waiting for someone else to say it as i didnt know for sure
only cars i can think of off the top of my head (in other words: not a complete list) that had any kind of 4 wheel steering, are certain versions of the 240SX/silvia/180SX/200SX (depending on where you are from), the skyline (not 100% sure about it though), the mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4, and the honda prelude Si 4WS

Ive never gone fast in reverse just for kicks but i did throw the tranny into reverse in my first beater camaro when it was time for the thing to die......funny thing was that the damn thing didnt die, i couldnt break the damn thing, i threw in into reverse at about 50(mph) on the meadowbrook parkway in long island late at nite, and after almost going threw the windsheild the damn car started going in reverse. it was hysterical. me and my buddies took it for a sign that this car must be destined to do far greater things so now its being stripped and turned into a group drag car :D
by the way the reason the reverse gear in a manual tranny whines is because its a spur gear, as opposed to the helical gears that transfer power more efficently because more then one tooth is in mesh at a time.... neway i guess thats not really y they whine just take it from me Spur gears whine

Actually, I have heard of 300ZXs (Z32) with the Super HICAS system.

I was just at z32.org and it says... "Speed-sensitive power power rack & pinion with Super HICAS 4 wheel steering"
Here's the link if anyone (I doubt it though) is interested...

oh it has nothing to do with that
the reason why it didnt break is this:
whenever you TRY to kill a car, it wont die
cars only die through meticulous maintenance :)

Oh, tangie! that is the coolest noise in the world!! nothing like good old straight toothed gear whine to get the juices flowing. Did you know that most race cars are ALL straight tooth geared? so they make one HELL of a racket when they race..

Used to do it all the time - the old house had a rather long driveway going into a rather busy road, and due to the large cars per parking space ratio there was no chance of turning the car around, so one had to back out. I used to floor it in reverse down the long driveway which always tends to scare the passengers and piss off the neighbours whose windows are just along the driveway. Then you had to wait for a gap in traffic, floor it in reverse again, instantly shifting to D and floor it forward. Maybe that had something to do with the band in the auto box dying prematurely...
