Real dsm tuners know...

This morning starting up the old spyder. I let the engine warm up for a few minutes while I put my spare in my trunk. (back tires getting kinda bald, never know what can happen). When I get back in I notice my rpms idleing alittle low and alittle boggish. about 300 rpms below 1000(its norm). I look at my psi gauge and notice the vacume kinda off abit as well. So I give my car 1 good rev. And the Bov lets off its normal pssssschewwww. But not like every other day. This time It was alittle louder, high pitched. Thinking I may have a boost leak somewhere. So I pop the hood to have a glance. Taking alook at my rubber seal that connects my inake and my bov. Saw that it might not be as tight on the bov as it should or could be. I turn off the car, and re attatch the seal alittle firmer and turn the needle to my bov alittle more to the harder setting(less noise). Turn on the car to see if that was my sorce of the problem. Turned on the car, it purred at 1000 rpms exactly, and my boost gauge's vacume was perfectly still. Thinking to myself, im actually getting to know my car pretty well. Just for the fact I noticed a problem and could tell what sort of problem it was and fixed it. Gave me the greatest feeling that morning...!

Congrats bro! The first in many MANY small annoyances that we have to know in order to drive these cars properly.

I hate it when I'm the cause of my own annoyance. I had a screw driver fall into my engine bay and lodge itself between the engine and fire wall. That damn thing made so much noise, like my engine was coming apart. The funny thing of it all is the dealership mechanic left her screwdriver under my hood 3 weeks before. So I said if you can get my screwdriver out I'll give you yours.

Im seeing about 22 in-hg on the vacume. But my car always idled at 1000rpms. But just droped down to almost 500 rpm.

Keep in mind guys that the stock tachs are not very accurate, especially at idle. Mine always looks like 900 rpm, but the ECU says 750. Tach shows 7300 rpm before the ECU shows 7k, etc.

Nice job fixing that problem. Running a bit lean will lower your idle rpm. For anyone wondering, a preturbo leak will cause you to run lean. Un metered air is entering the system, so no fuel is added to match it. Same goes for post turbo leaks, but only under vacuum. Under boost, a post turbo leak will cause you to run rich. Also some leaks may appear at vauum, but not under boost, and vice versa ;) The best way to spot an intake leak under vacuum is with a datalogger. If anyone wants to test for boost leaks, go to www.vfaq.com and build the intake leak tester. The first time I used it I took 5 tenths off my time, and added 4-5 mph ;)
