I am quite interested with "front mount", but I never heard of it before. could you tell me what is it? :p

A Front Mount Intercooler is when the intercooler is front mounted where u can see it. Usually WRX's come top mounted or side mounted intercoolers, it is better if you front mount it because u would get more air for more induction.

definately white.

and if you are into modifications, add an sti rear wing (you know the 22b style), foglights, lower the car, front mount cooler and add some custom made side-skirts. now THAT would be a kick arse MY03!!! We have plenty of the new STis around here, and let me tell you! :iceslolan

this is a photochop i made of the 03 when it was released late last year or something.
i changed ride height, increased rim size, changed the front bumper, changed the lights, decreased the bonnet scoop size, and oh yeah. its 2doors :D

After:

here, just changed it into white

What exactly does Shorty think an intercoolers purpose is? It has nothing to do with the engine induction. An intercooler is there to remove the heat in the air that is caused by the compression of the turbo.

Rex's (WRX) traditionally had top mounted intercoolers for more efficient packaging and also to reduce the chance of intercooler damage during a rally stage. This explains the scoop on the bonnet. On the MY03 STi this scoop was enlarged to facilitate a higher volume of air to flow throught, thereby greater cooling of the compressed air and theoretically more power.

One more thing, perhaps I am not as worldly as young Shorty, but I have never seen nor hear of a side mounted intercooler on a front engined car.

Not to get off track too much joecwlaw, I think an STi looks awesome dressed in black. Rims should be black with a silver or chrome lip.

It has everything to do with engine induction. It actually cools the hot hair so it is denser and carries more air particles to the engine, which allows for better and safer induction. This is from howstuffworks.com

The intercooler further increases the power of the engine by cooling the pressurized air coming out of the compressor (turbo) before it goes into the engine. This means that if the turbocharger is operating at a boost of 7 psi, the intercooled system will put in 7 psi of cooler air, which is denser and contains more air molecules than warmer air

So could you please stfu and know what you are talking about before you start to correct other members. hmkay?

In the WRC, FMIC have been used for a long long time. In fact, I cannot recall when they actually did use top-mounted coolers. Why would they care about intercooler damage during a rally stage? A rally car costs 1.2 million US dollars. The driveline of the car is worth around US$200,000. I don't think they care too much about an extra $3500 that a good custom cooler would cost.

WRX come with a top-mounted cooler because a) they are cheaper than front mount and b) they want to supply some sort of cooling system in their cars. Manufacturers who build a turbo car, without having some sort of cooling system are CRAZY. That's the reason why all Lancer Evo's had front mounted coolers, all Celica GT-Fours had top mounted coolers. If I was paying the AU$45,000 for a wrx, I want it to work, and I want it to work good.

Surely you should know how stuff works without having to visit Howstuffworks.com what withyour R34 GTR Nur out in your driveway. On a side note, induction comes via the air cleaner. This is as a result of turbine speed which is driven by exhaust gas speed. The turbine will then speed up the air. The intercooler, or is then brought into action as a way of cooling the air, thus increasing its density. In high school physics you way learn that air density is inversely proportional to temperature.

You, for the most part answered your accusations levelled towards me by agreeing with me. However safer induction is not the role of an intercooler. Perhaps a trip back to Howstuffworks.com for an explanation of the role of a blow off valve, or just pop the bonnet of the R34 when you have the time.

Again, not to disagree, but rally cars exist to win, not for show like most cars you likely associate with. If you damage an intercooler mid stage you loose considerable power and run the risk of enormous engine damage with regards to premature detonation. This would result in the car being unable to complete the stage/rally. If this happens often enough teams loose sponsorship. Without such, cars don't compete at all. See Mitsubishi, Hyundai etc... Also my post I use the word traditionally. Perhaps I should have said originally WRX's had top mounted intercoolers ... etc. I guess this wasn't covered on Howstuffworks.com, but hey, the internet is still growing. It might feature next week. :p

either way, having a front mount intercooler means cooler air than a top mount. am i right? i'm sure that's what shorty truly meant

okay after i typed up a long post and my IE crashed, I will simply retort to this.

You said intercoolers had nothing to do with induction, and you yourself proved that they did. Don't know about you, but I call that rather dumb. I was merely using Howstuffworks.com to prove to your n00b ass that they do. Don't know about you again, but I've met some pretty retarded people in my life, who believe that stickers and a huge bodykit will give you horsepower. I won't argue with you about cars, because quite frankly this is a modelling forum, and hence I really cbf argueing about air flow, WRX history, or the proportion of horsepower compared to the cross section of your exhaust tip.

and lol at your comment about me associating with schow cars. I find it fascinating how you judge me, having 6 posts in your belt, and never having met me before. gg :loser:

Ok you guys, having a WRX myself ill tell you this, the intercooler is on the top of the engine because with the boxer configuration its a lot easier to run the piping to a top mount rather then a front mount, and all the room in the bay allows for a topmount to be present. In the older non turbo subarus there used to be a spare tire on top of the engine. Also the rally car uses a front mount because the gains from the frontmount are way greater than from the top mount. A topmount I/C on a rally car would be too insufficent unless its like half the size of a normal frontmount.

How interesting that you attack me for, in your mind judging you. How ironic. Also I never have made any mention to an association between the number of stickers on a car and claimed horsepower. Pehaps you are confused again. Nor for that matter did I mention anything to do with cross section of exhaust tip and power. My comment on exhaust had to do with waste gas leaving the cylinder of an engine and thus driving turbine speed. I would assume what with your immence world experiance you'd already know this.

RX7FD, thanks for your insight on the intercooler location in a WRX engine bay. And finally Sebster, I would enjoy the opportunity of meeting you however I cannot fit my car onto any of the many bike tracks that our city of Melbourne has, so perhaps a rendezvous will have to wait until such time that your acne has cleared up, your voice broken and your dad lets you out of the backseat of his beige Camry. So long my friend :loser: :bigthumb:

Not white, but here's a couple of reference pics I took last night
http://www.exodus-online.com/ryan/251003/images/DSC02261.jpg

and as you can see below, the piping for a fmic on a WRX is quite complex, the main reason why Subaru keep them top mount from factory.
