if the engine is located behind the front axle, or in front of the rear axle, basically if its anywhere between the axles, its considered mid engined, so does rx-7 have its engine located behind its front axle? or is it considered mid?

An interesting point.
The S2000 also has its engine located behind the frount axle, infact in the sports car world its not that uncommon.

However conventionaly a mid engined car actualy has the engine located behind the driver, but in front of the rear axle, which is generaly more middle of the car, than having it just behind the front axle.

However an easy way to work it out is to find the cars mid point and look at the engines location relative to that. I think you will find that the RX7 like the S2000 still has the engine mounted quite far forward, making it a Front engined car.

However that is not to say that its not possible for a car to be midnegined and have the engine infront of the driver, but it would make the car entertaining to drive.

yea better balance for the car. car companies tend to say its mid mount on front engined cars if its located pretty far back. i like to call them front mid engined cars, but for cars like the nsx, and the mr2, i refer to them as mid engined.

I suppose the RX-7 could be referred to as that.
I know Nissan was promoting their Infiniti G35 Sedan as a "Front mid-ship engine", since it has the engine behind the front axle.
The 350Z and G35 Sedan share this platform as well as the NIssan Skyline.

That term will probably become more common as more sports cars are coming back onto the field. :sunglasse :

correction, it was Mazda with the RX-8 who was advertising the "front mid-ship engine" placement thing..

I think someone needs to go look under the hood of a 350z/G35... its engine is placed more like a Subaru, than the Mazda RX-8.
