my check engine light has come on and my mechanic and i have found that it is an EGR valve problem. This is the valve that controls carbon build up in the combustion chambers right?
does prolonged driving of this problem harm the engine in anyway? because if i dont need to fix ithis im not going to..i just spent close to 700 on maitenance.
** oh also will this have any effect on VTEC?

You need to get that fixed because it can ruin your car. You shouldn't have to pay for it because it is under the factory recall so take it to your Honda Dealer ASAP. The EGR Valve problem showed up when my engine hit 54K Miles and I took it to a Honda Dealer and they fixed it for free (no out of pocket expense at all).

recall was on selected cars in 2000 year model, so your car isn't part of recall. but EGR is covered by 8year/80000miles warranty.
if your car is out of warranty you can buy EGR kit from dealer for about $70 and have your mechasnic install it.

We have a 1997 Honda Accord V6 ...
The check engine light came on, and the tachometer bounces around - this makes it sound somewhat like the problems others have had with the EGR valve. But...
1. The EGR valve problems that have been discussed (and service bulletin to fix them) apparently apply to 1998 and later models, not 1997's. Has anyone with a 1997 v6 Accord had this problem?
2. Can I just clean the EGR valve, and not have to worry about the fix kit in this 1997 V6?
3. When I called about the EGR valve itselfe, I found that it costs ~$115 (NAPA) or ~$160 (Honda). This seems awfully high, compared to the other costs mentioned for the entire EGR fix kit from Honda.
Anyone have comments on this?
Thanks much,
Dave
