i have a 1998 z-71 and the truck wouldn't start ... with a couple taps with a hammer on the tank it fired right up, so i know i have a fuel pump going out .... the parts store wants $300 for a fuel pump for a 1998 , while a fuel pump for a 1997 is only $80 ... i asked why the price difference and the responce was u can only buy the 1998 as the whole assembly, while the 1997 is jus the pump ... well all i need is tha pump .... my question is this .. does anyone know if i can interchange the 1997 fuel pump with my assembly and just reuse my assembly, i'm not sure , but their the same truck and theres a big price difference between $300 and $80 for the same vechicle. thanks in advance.

Like you said the '97 is a pump only & the '98 is whats called a module, its a pump/sender/wireing all
in one assy. The answer to your question is no, because its more than just the way its serviced, its
diferences in enectrical connectors, fuel line connections, ect. You have no idea of how many different pump/module assy's that are used on a
C/K chassis. The truck may look the same from year to year, youd be suprised what changes take place!
Also buy an A/C pump, dont save $10.00 to get an off brand, youll regret it. I've seen people advertise "repair" pumps for the module's, I've never used one & I'd be leary of these, if you could even find one.
Don't forget to hang a new filter when you do the pump.

Did you try NAPA for a price. There pumps and module kits are made by Carter

thought i'd put in my two cents, if it's worth even that! i've replaced a BUNCH of these pumps and the GM pump is a more reliable part. how much fuel is in the tank? if it's a lot i always take the mounting bolts out of the bed, take the filler loose from the bedside, unplug the taillight connectors, i think there's one or two grounds bolted to the frame, get a couple of buddies and lift the bed off the frame and set it on the rear tires and the bumper..lots easier than dropping a tank w/30 gals of fuel

just so you know it may not be the fuel sending unit. 98 z71 have a problem with the wire connectors on top of the fuel tank to the pump. junk connectors that should have been recalled but were not, they become looseover the yearsand burn the contacts. also on one i replaced i found the connector on the new pump did not fit the trucks plug perfectly and i had to fix the new pump to make a good connection. it may save a lot of money

What he said is a good point.
I helped a friend fix his blazer that worked when he hit the tank and irt was caused by the burned connector on top.
NAPA actually has a poster picture of the bad connector to show the problem and not replace the pump unnecessarily. The connector has been modified to a better connection.
