V-tec not so high tec

It really isn't, it's an ingenious design, but not really all that high tech. I learned about it in my engine class today.. Three lobes on the camshaft, two small and one large; the large lobe on the camshaft spins the lifter freely while the two smaller ones move together at low RPM's, as the RPM's get high enough for V-Tec to kick in, something releases oil into a chamber, and acts as a solenoid locking the three lifters together, after which the large lobe on the camshaft controls all three for higher revving. I understand that's how V-tec works...We didn't go to in depth since we care more about GM than anything. Anyone have any input about this system, i wouldn't mind knowing more about it in case i missed anything? I learned about i-tec also, it's pretty interesting stuff.

It seems like a simple concept and is but it has been used in f1 cars for years and many companies have their own variations so please don't disregard it just because it seems "simple".

not so high tech! simple saying but think of that while the engine is spinning with 5,000rpm how does it engage smoothly & flawlessly over & over again!!!!

v-tec is pretty simple in its design....but like it has been said-its effective. now BMW has that continuouly variable lift system-thats cool stuff-there is never a set lift or duration. IT has computer controlled rockers that can increase or decrease cam agressiveness by the input of the throttle-the cams just serve as an idle base. PRetty kick ass stuff.

I don't remember anyone saying it was here to replace sliced bread, but it serves it's purpose well.

It's funny how no one has yet corrected the improper use of the term VTEC. Once again for the 1,000,000th time. Its not V-TEC, VTECH, V-TECH just plain old VTEC!!!!!! Its ridiculous correcting this over and over again. There should be a program where it wont let you post if you spell it incorrectly. :)

Ever been in a modded all-motor Honda with vtec? Your views on low displacement 4-bangers will change forever. I just met up with some dude off another board with an LS/vtec engine with internals and cams all swapped out, new computer, all bolt-ons etc., and good lord... I almost regret my swap now.
