I have 1991 2 door 4 cylinder Toyota Tercel with about 120K miles. Lately it has been not wanting to start. When I turn the key and push in the clutch it clicks one time and does not start. Ocansionally, after repeated attempts, and if it is warm outside it will start(usually when it is above 70 degrees). I replaced the battery but still get the same results. Before I replace any more parts I want to get more info. How can I fix this problem? Any help is appreciated Thanks!

Sorry for not replying sooner. I was able to get the car repaired by replacing the starter. It did not dawn on me to think of the starter first, but whatever. the car is fixed and Thank You everyone that replied.

I ended up taking it to a auto shop that I trust but the damn starter cost me 350.00 to get and installed. the starter was 160.00 alone. the mech told me that toyota has a, I forgot the name he called it, but it was something like disengage starter or something. It does not sound like the original starter anymore but it cranks the engine and takes me back and forth to work. anyone else have info on such an experience or info simular situations would love to hear from you. Thanks again everyone!

Geezus they burnt you!
I build starters for a living, most toyotas are $85 for the starter, and $45-55 to install. Exactly what do you mean it doesn't sound like the old starter? Does it whine?

Yes it whines. Does that mean it is a better starter? I though that it to high but did not have the time to go else where. I have done business with these people in the pass but that was then. They have supposedly a good reputation with what Denver calls the troublshooter(Tom Martino) but I am not believing that much anymore. Thanks for the Update!

Whining typicaly means gears aren't meshing properly, that could be anything from the starter cocked in the hole just a bit, to dirt left inside.
