I was curious if anyone has heard of this but I was at a local auto parts store and I was told that you can use transmission fluid for the power steering. He told me that Chevy uses that so that you don't have to use so many different fluids.I was wondering if this was true.I have never heard that before. If anyone could verify if this is true.He also told me that if you mix power steering fluids with the transmission fluids that it would gel.I appreciate any feed back. Thanks

the two fluids have almost the same consistency but i definitely wouldnt worry about it... they have two different types of fluids for a reason so i dont really know...if you find something out be sure to post it tho

Ok I talked to 2 dealerships here in town yesterday by the way I have a 99 Camaro anyway I was told by both people that it uses 2 different fluids and one of the guys told me that that has not been done in like 20 years so I consider these 2 sources reliable since they both told me the same thing and both from the dealership.

The difference is simple. Transmission fluid is intended to operate in a very high friction environment, the power steering fluid is not. If GM could use the same fluid, they would and save the expense of two different types. Use power steering fluid in the steering fluid in the power steering, use trans fluid in the trans. GM does not use trans fluid in the steering. Trans fluid is red, steering fluid is clear. Ray
