I did a stupid thing. I bought a 1996 Isuzu Trooper SE with a verbal contract of returning it if it did not pass the car checkers mechanic test. Needless to say, it did not pass. The guy cashed the check and basically tells me I'm out of luck. Stupid me for trusting people :(
Anyhow the valve cover gaskets are leaking, the oil pump is weak, the lifters are noisy, the oil filter is leaking, the alternator drive belt is broken, and the right C.V boot is leaking. Now I have spent all of my money on the car and have very little left to fix it. Can anyone help me in any way? Are you a mechanic who isn't going to charge me 400%for labor? Do you know of one? I am in Atlanta, Georgia. If I can get it driveable, I will travel.

Prioritize! The only problem I see right now is the alt. belt. Have it replaced, change the oil and filter, snug up the valve covers, add a can of leak sealer, and drive it. 50-75 bucks maybe. P.S. what makes you think the oil pump is weak?

run a quart of tranny fluid with your oil change 4.5 qts engine oil 1 qt. tranny fluid continue this untill oil pressure comes up and ticking goes away it will work did it with my own I bought it with 273,000miles its now at 286,000 oil pressure is good and no more ticking
if you are pretty good with tools you should be able to replace valve cover gaskets but thats not a big issue like trhester said snug em up
the boot I would definatly take care of as soon as possible if you are planning on getting it muddy or wet its cheaper to change the boot than the entire shaft

the qt tany. fluid is an old trick. but only run it for about 50 miles and then change your oil.

What does running a quart of tranny fluid with the oil do? How long should you run it. The full term before a normal oil change? My 99 trooper has a slight ticking noise also. This doesn't damage anything else does it?

wswinter, automatic trany fluid has more detergent than motor oil-so basicly it cleans up your engine. but i would'nt run it for more than about 50 miles. some of the older jap engines have a slight ticking which is normal. but i don't know about a 99. it could be normal?
