If you don't mind not having a/c, then the biggest motor is a 502 c.i.d.

Biggest stock in a Trans Am was the 455's of the early 70's. Mmmmm, Pontiac Power.
502 should bolt up as I think your car will have the 7004R tranny which has a chevy bolt pattern already.

the 700r4 will work, as long as the tranny came with a v8 to begin with. If the tranny is from a v6 it will need a different bellhousing and a few other things.

Most of those came with a Chevy-based engine. You can tell what the trans will fit if you can get a good look at the top of it. If there is two extra holes close to the top bolts (not to be confused with pin holes between bottom and center bolts), it is the universal case, which fits everthing GM. If you only have six holes, and a slight peak between top bolt holes, it's the Chevy case. If it has a small valley shape instead of a peak, it is the Buick-Olds-Pontiac trans.

if you have ttops your car might bust because of 3rd generation's frame is not strong enough that is why no 5.7L V8's were put in with ttops until 88 or 89. because that is when they strengthened it. also a 700R-4 is an ok tranny unless you are going over 300hp then get a better tranny like a turbo 350 or turbo400. if you want a 455 or 502 make sure you get the frame strengthened, very heavily. an for you people who think that is wrong, i got all info from high performance pontiac magazine, March 2003
