Transmission Trouble

When I put the car into reverse or drive from park, I hear and feel this "thud". It also happens when I pull up to a red light and put it in neutral to slow down, and when I get to around 10 mph, the same thud feel and sound. I took it to cottman transmission and they told me I had a bad differential and that I needed a complete tranny rebuild that would cost around 18-1900 bucks. I'm taking it to another place for a second opinion, but wanted to know if anyone had any ideas.

hmm they really tried to screw you huh? well, most likely its low transmission fluid. usually it can be added/checked with a dipstick thats under the hood. if it isnt that, then it may be the transmission cooling system.

Yea, the fliud level can have similar undesired results. I do though, wonder why you shift into nuetral while you stop...besides causing excess wear to your brakes (Dont do it anymore :screwy:)
Anyway, just thought id add that, hope it helps, & good luck!!!

Ended up being a shift solenoid. Mechanic said it's just pressure building up and releasing itself in neutral in case I would put it back into gear. He even went on to a site with other big mechanics and they said the same thing. Just stop putting it in neutral to slow down and stop. Anyone know how much it would cost to replace a solenoid anyways? Labor and parts? Thanks.
