How are you guys removing chrome without damaging the parts? I tried brake fluid and CSC, but they both start eating the plastic before getting all the chrome off. What else do you guys use?

How long do you have to leave it soak?

Hawk,

Try Easy Off oven cleaner (not the fumeless one though), place the wheels in a tupperware type dish and spray the Easy Off on them, seal the container and leave them for 30 minutes or so, the chrome should be stripped by then.

You can also use CSC pretty effectively although it takes longer to strip the chrome.

Don't forget to wash the wheels thoroughly afterwards.

I use bleach myself. You have to let the parts soak a few hours, but it strips the chrome fully and is nowhere near as toxic as oven cleaner.

Oh, and by the by, oven cleaner does melt some plastics. Particularly the plastic in older Revell and Monogram kits.

I use bleach on chrome parts. Works great, and no melting or anything.

I agree with Freakray. I use a gelly type of oven cleaner. 10 to 15 mins max. and the chrome is gone. Just make sure you clean it thoroughly afterwards. You should be fine then.

CSC in a small jar, chrome gone in under ten minutes

Always try whatever method you use on scrap parts, or plated sprue from the same kit.

Windex type window cleaner works on some 'chrome'.

Don't forget to read and follow the directions on the chemicals you are using! Be Safe!
