Thinking About Buying A 1st Gen Eclipse

Hi,

I am considering buying a 1st gen eclipse after driving my friends 90 Eclipse GS with the 135hp engine. The car looks good and has got some power to it. But I also heard that some of the 90-91 eclipse's had the 92hp slow engine. I really dont want that version so how can I tell besides by the GS?
Like im looking at a few pics in autotrader and they all seem to have a "rise" in the hood of the cars. Does this mean it is a GS? And if it doesnt have the hood scoop is it the 92hp engine?

Would this car be a GS? It has a hood scoop thing.

What years did they stop making the 92hp engine?
Im sorry I dont know much about DSM's im more of a Honda guy.
But I need a car with more power without going broke.
After driving my friends 90 GS it felt pretty good.

Thanks

Pop the hood and see if it has the 2.0 DOHC (135hp) motor, or the 1.8 SOHC (90hp) motor. I think if it doesnt have the hump it has the 1.8.

wow, you know what
that car look very familiar,I think that car tried to race me yesturday. he was riding my ass at the light. and did his lil burning out when he left the light. its slow as balls too, it was struggling to pass me while I was only doin partial throttle. I think it was a 1.8 with intake an new hubcaps it also had no spoiler

where in FL is it?

It is near Tampa or St Peterburg area.
Not quite sure.
Is the 1.8 liter engine easily modded?
What would they probably run in the 1/4 mile?
Thanks

no its not easily modded
in the 1/4 it will run like a 21 or 22 with a nice wind gust of wind behind it

Lol, well it would still be faster than my 90 Civic.
I think I run a 17' with intake and exhaust with only a 1.5 liter engine.
If I was to put intake exhaust and possibly header on da 1.8 liter engine could I possibly get into the 16's?
Thanks

Probably not. Must 1.8 N/As with intake and exhaust I've seen run 18s.

LMAO the gust of wind made me laugh. I have a 93' Gs with an exhaust and intake, they arent made to race with unless you put a turbo in, trust me, but if your gonna race kids with 1.8 civics, why not. I honestly believe that getting the 2g 4g63 eclipse is a better buy, imho it has a nicer look and there are more mods for it out for low prices. If you want to run the 1/4 in good speeds, get an gsx or a gst 2g.

yea hey it looks like u guess dont no wut ur talkin bout when it comes to 1.8s. they both have the little raise in the hood errrrr. And there not slow its an audi engine and can easily out run and 2.0s or turbos for that matter. I have a custom turbo on mine from and audi 1.8T and i hit low 13s only runnin about 13psi of boost so yea juss decided to add my 2 cents. :screwy: u ppl got probs. those 2.0 engines go out after about 100k miles and juss suck.

1.8 all the way :icon16:

I have seen with my very own eyes Talons with the 1.8 with no bump. And the 100K mile comment is just stupid. :screwy:

I dunno if its the engine or that alot of ppl juss dont take care of those 2.0 but alot ive seen have had been rebuilded etc. and still seem to have probs the 2.0 stock isnt that much faster than a 1.8 stock maybe by half a second or so. N show me a pic of a 1.8 without no hump then i will believe cause it doesnt exsist if there is one 1 its prolly not stock.

The 2.0 non turbo has the same internals as the turbo 4g63. Which can make 500 whp with stock internals. You cant do that with the 1.8 ;) There are plenty of local guys here running 11s and 12s on motors with up to 180k miles. I had 130k on mine (running low 12s) and when I Took it out to send in as a core, it was still mint. If there were any plans to turbo a car, I would only use a motor that was already designed to take boost. It just plain makes sense.

The NT pistons are weaker than the Turbo pistons. The cams are also different from late 91+. Everything else would be the same.
