No power getting to the fule relay

This is what happen. just before winter i parked the car and used my winter beater. when spring came i went to start the car and it wouldent start. so i started to check the basic shit, does it have gas? Yes . Check all the fuses? Yes . getting spark? Yes . GEtting fule? NO . ok so i wasent getting fule..is there fule in the take? Yes . ok now i dubble check the fuse box. all look fine. now iam thinking dammit , my fuel pump is bad. not thinking abut the fule relay i went and got a fuel pump. $89 later and rust in the eyes still not starting. now iam mad. so i take the old fuel pump and wire it direct to the battery, its working fine.....now iam really mad. so i get on the phone with a few friends. they say to get a new fule relay. there $5 what the heck, so i get 1. Well there is 4 or 5 i really cant rember, but i tryed it on all the 1's it fit, and still no workey. so iam thinking maybe brok it when trying it on all the differnt relay plugs, so i go get another 1 and before i tryed pluging it in i too a wire and put it on the postivite on the battery and found which wire on the relay plug that ran the fule pump (when jumping the wire to the battery the fule pump ran) so i put the new relay on it and it still dident work. so i kept the relay pluged in and spliced the wire a little so i could clip a wire on to it and run it to the battery, when i turn the key on the pump primes it self for 2 sec, then turns off. that seam like it was normal. so i tryed to start it. WOOT, it runs. But the service engin soon light is on. Ok so something cant be right if i had to jump a wire to the relay. So i took it for a spin to AutoZone on the way i notice the car cant get outa its way. wont go into passing gear, hell it wont even downshift. but i can put it into 2nd gear my self . So iam hoping they got a hand held computer.thye do , they plug it in underneeth the driver side dash , turn the key to the on postion and it gives him 7 error codes . p0753 "shift solenoid a circuit" , p0758 "shifl solenoid b circuit" , p1651 "manufature aux inputs aux out" , p1652 , p1655 , p1864 , p0135 " o2 sensor bank 1" .
iam like dammall that shit is worng with my car??? so i tell the whay the same story iam typing here, he said to take off the wire i jumped to the battery and let him run the test again. so i did. now hes getting no errors. He said because i jumped that wire its causing other things not to work right. i tryed again without the wire and still dident work. so i reconnect it and got a chilton. i read everything that i could understand about the fule system. and i checked everything that i could. the only other thing it tells em to do is take it to a dealer. that would cost me way too much money for them to look at it for me. So i conclude that there is something before the fule relay thats not giving power. a possibel broken wire. or some type of componet i dont know about, or a fuse hiding outa my view.... PLEASE HELP ME! iam going crazy!

ok i traced all the sum of the wires from the fule relay . they ended up at the ECM i hooked up a test light to see if there was a break in the wire and it all looks good. but it started to rain and dident get to trace the last wire on the relay. the orange wire that i taped into to get the car running none of the wires are hot, not even at the ECM. So no i think i gota figure out what trigers the ECM to send power to the fule relay. Or trace the orange wire to see what it goes to. in the chilton it says to should be hot all the time.... but without my jumper to the battery , its not hot. and if it susposed to be hot all the time, jumping it like i did should solve the problem... but iam still getting a check engin light and its not shifting right.

Ok i found a broken wire, right by the fuse near the relay, right in front of me. os i repaird it. Now i dont need the jumpr to the battery. But iam still getting a service engin soon light, and i took it to auto zone again ,and iam still getting the same errors i posted above. still gota shift manualy.... still only got 2nd gear and regular drive, no overdrive and not 1st gear. any ideas?

Check for power on the Pink wire (terminal E) at the transmission. Should have 12v with the key on, engine off.
I will post more when I find a better schematic.

ok i check the wire harness that plugs into the transmission. " i think its was the right 1" it had 5 or 6 wires gong to it, "round" there was a pink. with the key in the on postion none on the wires were hot. for shits and giggles i started the engin and put it in reverce and then drive it shifted gears with it unpluged. Now i went to a transmission shop down the road from me, he hooked up his computer and read the codes for me. it was the same codes. he asked me if i cleare the codes since i found the bad wire. i said no. so he then cleared the codes with his computer, then re ran the test. i dident have a piece of paper to get the number of the code, but it was for the Transmission converter clutch "TCC" circuit. he said he dident have any 1 who was good with the wireing and that he had no clue... now iam wondering if there is a fuse for that anywhere, or a relay.. Am i going in the right direction ?

The pink wire has a fuse called the engine inline a/c fuse..it is taped to the wiring harness under the dash on the left side of the steering column.
As soon as I locate the proper schematics I'll let you know.
You have to have 12 volts on that wire for the shift controls to work properly. It will set codes related to the trans.

ok ill check that. is there a relay for that also? i noticed that the engin been running hoter that normal, and dident notice the cooling fan kicking on, and i think the thurmastat is doing all the cooling. iam gunna check that also, gota read the chilton.

Do either of you know if this same wiring/fuse arrangement holds true for a 96 BonnevilleSE? I've got a lot of the same error codes and the same shifting issues.

There are actually two fuses in small fuse holders taped to wiring bundles (both behind the glove box). One is the "multi-function alarm in-line fuse" (15 or 20 amp) and the other is the "Eng/AC fuse in-line Fuse". Both are standard two prong automotive fuses. They may be hard to see because they are covered in black electrical tape but they are both there on 1996 cars. It may be necessary to remove the glove box and look through the opening. The 10 amp "Eng/AC in-line Fuse" is the one causing the problem.
When it is blown if you will have transmission shift problems and a loss of power feeling when you drive the car. The engine will also run hot because the fan switches do not work. A few more problems will probably also exist.

This 10 amp Enging/AC fuse opening will result in the following OBD2 codes: P0134, P0753, P0758, P1651, P1652, P1655, P1864.

Good luck and I hope this information helps. The original post and the previous information certainly helped me to solve the problem with my 1996 oldmobile ciera. Thanks for the help and hope this follow up can help others.

Good info, but the posts are 2 years old!

I knew this was an old thread when I posted the reply. This old thread helped me and will probably help others in the future. The 1996 cars having these problems are still common on the road.

I certainly appeciate the assistance this thread provided. This thread along with a good service manual certainly saved me money by not having to pay a mechanic to find the blown fuse.

At first, this certainly looked like a serious transmission problem but turned out to be a simple but well hidden fuse. I hope the additional details in the reply can provide enough specific information so others will not even have to have a service manual to repair this problem.

You are a genious... I had all the problems described and it was that red 10amp fuse behind the glove box. Just an FYI. I love these forums, probably saved me 100's in diagnostics and a likely wrong diagnosis by overpaid mechanics. Thanks a bunch!!
