What would I need to turbo my sohc engine? Also what brands would you reccommend? Please tell me all the parts and what would be the maximum boost allowed? Also I was thinkin of boring out piston holes to make them bigger and put new pistons in and a new cam. What is your opinion on this? Thanks

Sohc engines and turbos don't mix all that well. I know people dont always want to do an engine swap but sometimes its necessary for maximum gains. A dohc engine will respond ten times better to a turbo than a single cam will. I don't like the idea of turboing sohc motors anymore because I did it and didn't like the outcome.

dont listen to what everyone says, there is potential in every engine, and a turbo is one way to achieve it in the sohc.

An old friend had a turbo on his EX and it could kill almost everything on the road... He spent a small fortune for a reliable 220hp, but still, there's potential.

That's true, every engine has potential. It's up to you on how to tap into it, and turbo is one way of tapping into the potential of a SOHC engine. I'm first going to do some work on my SOHC engine myself before going F/I--see how far it can go, and once I've squeezed everything it has to give, then I'll look into F/I. As for brands, parts, etc. of turbo, I think the F/I forum here will have more answers.

Get a Greddy turbo... it's pretty much right out of the box bolt-on hp. Get an fmu, new injectors, a "missing link" (so your ecu doesn't read boost and make your engine run funny), and you can run 9.5lbs max on stock internals via a boost controller.

dont knwo about 9psi. but i think 6 is safe.. and from what i read back in the day, above 170hp on a sohc the rods have a good chance of snaping on you.

he's been running 9.5 ever since he got it like a year and a half ago.. I think he does just run 6 while going to work and stuff though.

so the statement
"he's been running 9.5 ever since he got it like a year and a half ago"
is actuly false.. (and im talking about a stock motor..)

On and off. I don't talk to him anymore though so I really don't know, I'm just saying he never had any problems with it. I'm not trying to argue with you man..

its cool bro, im sure you could run 9 psi on a perfectly tuned motor.. but honesty that kind of boost ona d series sounds scary to me, but maybe its just me :) im just saying that 6 would be much safer :)

my friend funkdaflex has his 98ex sohc and it runs a 14.6 in the 1/4 and that aint bad at all, it just costs a pretty penny. he has the Greddy turbo kit intercoller setup the whole deal. he is on the forums to so you can look up his name and his setup is all listed in his profile.

Putting boost on a single cam is the best thing to do. Greddy makes a kit for around 1500, comes with everything that you need to get started running low boost. I think that it doesn't come with a bov, intercooler, or injectors. http://www.optauto.com/webstore/product_information.asp?number=TP-11550021&variation=&aitem=20&mitem=20&back=yes&dept=124

Thanks for all the help. I have one more question. What about new pistons and shafts, should I bore them out and get bigger pistons? Also I heard somewhere that the D16 has the same size pistons as a Supra TT? Is that a load of crap or what?
