Heat Shield (Muffler)

2000 Chevy Tahoe LT
There is a grinding noise from the heat shield (so says Chevy service dept.) I was wondering if I take the heat shield off completely, will there be any negative affects? It is $100 to replace or free to take off.
Advice?

Seems like those pesky heat shields are more trouble than there worth. My last truck was not a Tahoe however I did have a rattling heat shield which I had a local muffler shop just remove. I never had a problem since and it sure was nice to have things quiet again. I have a 97 Tahoe now which I bought used and it also does not have a heat shield, I'm guessing it was removed by the previous owner for the same reason and I haven't had any problems from not having it.
