No GTR in Tokyo autoshow . . .

Looks like Nissan is still not ready to unleash a new beast to the public . . .

From Autoweek:

"No GTR for Tokyo
Despite intense speculation in Japanese automotive publications, Nissan says it has no plans to introduce the next-generation GTR coupe at this month’s Tokyo Motor Show. Nissan displayed a concept version of the GTR at the 2001 Tokyo show and the 2002 Geneva show, but isn’t ready to premier a production car to replace the R34 GTR. Nissan ceased production of the R34 GTR in August 2002 because the car’s engine was unable to meet increasingly strict emissions standards in Japan"

Today, (22nd) Ghosn stated that he will introduce the "Nissan GTR" at 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.
Happy to hear that it's coming, or unhappy to wait that long? ;)

ADD: By 2007, V35 should be replaced by V36, so the next GTR will most likely be based on the V36 generation FM platform. Or GTR could even be an advanced prototype for V37 FM platform. Remember that the next GTR won't carry the Skyline name.

2007? Thats so long from now!!! It's going to look extremely different from the R-34! In 2007, the R-34 will look old (but still awesome!). I bet the R-35 will be a lot more powerful and faster because in 2007, the performance standards will be higher.

That's not always true. there are several threads arguing, asking which is better, the R32, 33, or 34? So far the arguing has been between the R32 and R34. isn't the R33 suposed to bo be better than the R32? it looks like the R33 sucks compared to it's predecessor.

)All I can say is "poop" and, oh yeah BTW "crap", i still think they will come with something sooner than '07, the public interest is very high and the japs are not stupid about things like this (mabye wishful thinking...but let me enjoy it for a minute :icon16:)

Hold up. Skyline is dead. It died August 2002. the (R)35 is not going to bear the name Skyline.

I just saw the news on the Tokyo Motor show site . I was planning on heading there next weekend, but what a disappointment. Kind of makes sense though. Usually you will see spy shots of a pre-production car more than a year out from a new release. No spy shots yet would indicate a release after mid 2005 at the earliest. Hasn't been a lot of official talk from Nissan either.

I believe the sports car market is too dynamic right now. Lot of new iron in the game between $50k - $100k, all pushing 500 HP. Nissan probably got nervous of the prospect of introducing a car that will be in that price range, yet packing a V-6 and being heavy too. Probably rethought the marketability, and decided to wait and see how the numbers play out, and also rework the design.

There are only a finite number of people interested in a high end sports car. Right now the Market is saturated and every car is pretty bad A--! Nissan can only hope to grab a small slice of that pie, and it will have tough competition. A GTR that is essentialy a tuner G35/350Z may not generate the long range sales numbers that Nissan needs for profitability. (Remember the Japanese economy is not doing so hot.) Chevy fought that battle with ford and lost money on every F-body (Camaro) the sold for almost a decade. They finally packed it in. The F-body had better numbers and price, but was getting whooped by the Mustang in sales. Ford has always been about the bottom line, and has proven it. Unfortunately in this economy Nissan probably doesn't have the option of losing money on a new vehicle.

The Tokyo Motor show is also showing some great new sports cars from other Japanese manufacturers that will be tough competition. Looks like the new CSX (NSX) is pretty sweet!

Besides, Nissan is being run by that Frenchman Ghosn for pitty's sake! I am suprised they haven't tried to surender to someone yet.

Hopefully I can get some good shots of other stuff at the Motor show...

Yes I believe he is BUT, Nissan, is partially owned by Renault.

As far as the pricing of any future GTR, it is going to have to be competitive. How many persons under 30 do you know that can purchase a car in the 80 to 100K range??? Not many. If the next GTR is any more than 50-55K than they will have trouble selling it. Why?? Because not very many people 30yrs old and over know what a GTR is. My father has been around sports cars for years and if asked him what a Skyline is he would not have a clue.

Ah well, my hate for the French has caused me to rush to judgement. Appologies to Mr. Ghosn. Apparently he is a Brazillian of Lebanese heritage and trained in France. To his credit he has done a superb job with Nissan, both inovating and restructuring. Props to you Mr. Ghosn!

But anyway, I still can't stand the French. I took four years of French, studied French history, and travelled to France on two occasions, and have only the worst impression of these people. But that's only my opinion...

Well as someone else had post a little earlier the car has indeed been confirmed for 2007. I guess the article I say claiming a possible 473bhp was a bit off because they are now claiming 400bhp. Not bad at all, but not as breath taking as I had imagined. On the other hand based on the fact that is will (we assume) a turbo charged engine power upgrades should come fairly easy. Take a look at the article and see what you think.
