1992 caravan 3.0 voltage requlation problem

I have a 1992 dodge caravan with at 3.0 engine. It has 38,000 miles on it and it is burning up batteries. the voltage at the battery terminals is 14.2 volts loaded (with ac,light,) 14.3 unloaded. I am getting conflicting information as to where the voltage requlator is

version 1 is mounted on the firewall

version 2 there is no voltage regulator it is regulated by the computer.

could someone out there PLEASE help me locate my regulator.
