Oil Change????

What kind of Oil filter is good? And what kind of oil is Good? because i need to change the oil in my accord. and where the best place to get it changed?

i like to use chevron oil and frame oil filter.
I also heard that mobile 1 has good oil.

I really don't know the best place to get an oil change because I have never had anyone change my oil
My best advice is do it yourself, you save on money and you know that you are getting the job done correctly.

I had a friend of mine get his oil change at the dealership. it cost him big ("wasted") bucks and that day, he noticed he had an oil leak.
The people working there didn't screw on the oil filter tightly. Thus coming home, he had a huge oil mess under his car.
I laugh at him because he drives a Jeep SUV and it's EASY as heck to change the oil on those because you don't need to lift the car.

Try changing the oil for a lowered car...it's a little harder :)

anyways...changing the oil is easy. you should have no problems.

1.) set the car on park with the parking brake on (or put into 1st gear if you drive a 5 speed)

2.) get a jack and lift up the front end of your car. Probably around the driver side is the best.

3.) also place a wooden block or brick on the back side of your rear tire for added safty. you do not want the car to roll away while it's up in the air.

4.)then get a t-stand and place that under the car once the car is in the air. that gives you some more added safty because you will be under the car and you do not want the car to drop down on you.

5.)then loosen the oil drain nut and have the oil pour into a pan where you can dump it later. Don't forget to recycle the used oil!!!!

6.)it's a good idea to open the oil cap from inside the engine at this time so that you don't get a vacuum effect. By having the cap opened, it helps the oil pour out of the pan easier.

7.)After all the oil is out....plug the drain with the nut. (also change the washer on the oil drain nut)

8.)Then loosen the oil filter. becareful because you will have some more oil pouring out from that area.

9.)next take you new oil filter and place a little bit of oil around the edges at the seal. this makes it easier on your when you have to remove it again.

10.)put the new oil fiter back on and you're all set.

11.)pour the new oil in and take it for a short test drive to see if you have any leakage.

i've changed my oil before. the only reason i want to take it to a shop this time is because i needed to change the oil filter...and someone told me that i need a special tool to take it out? is that true? or can i just unscrew it by hand?

let me help out more by answering your oil filter question.
actually....yes....you can unscrew the filter by hand.
however, that all depends on how tight it is.
you are suppose to tighten the oil filter by hand to begin with. because of that, you should be able to unscrew it by hand.

just simply get a good strong grip of it and turn.


if you are having troubles, then yes...you do need a simple tool.
you can actually buy this tool for really cheap.
just go into your oil section of your autostore and you'll find all sorts of types of tools for the job.
the one i recommend is the tool that looks like a big ring with a handle on it. for me, it works the best.

I wouldnt use a FRAM oil filter to save my life.. They are junk.. Mobil1 filters and Mobil1 Synthetic is the best way to go.

Honda OEM filters are the best and use Mobil 1 Trisynthetic 5w30 :cool:

Hey I use Honda's oil filter (OE) & Mobile 1 oil when I change the oil in my mean machine....:devil:

i changed my oil for the first time 2 weeks ago, it was easy, took me like 15 minutes. except my car was too low to drive it on the jackstands. so we had to rig em up a bit. i used a puralator filter because thats what the guy suggested, and mobil 1 tri synthetic oil. 10w-30 since i live in georgia i don't need 5w-30

How did you get under your Accord? I'm dropped 2" and I can barely get a jack under it. Please share. :cool:

"Rhino Ramps" $39 at most auto stores. They are made of polyester and nylon and will support a Suburban 2500. They haveless of an incline the metal units, which were also more $$. I put a small piece of 1x6 wood on the leading edge of each ramp then drive up, my flaps almost scrape but I now have the clearnce to slide under.


btw, oil filter wrenches are $3.99 at most stores.

yeah...there are several things you can do.

for me, i drive my car on to two wooden blocks.
the blocks were cut from a simple 2X4...pretty much adding myself about 1.5inches of lift off the ground.
that is just enough room for my jack to fit under the car.

if it doesn't work, you can place the jack as close as possible to the car and then with both hands, grap the fender of your car and lift upwards...then kick the jack under the car hoping that it will slip into place. sometimes you have to try a few times.

lastly, you can drive the car sideways on your driveway on the edge of the curb. that will lean the car towards one end and give you some room to place your jack under the car.
it also gives you some extra room to be under the car as well.

Thanks for the information about the jacks. By the way why do you say hand tight for the oil filter? I figured its pressurized and it might back itself off. I put my hand tight and with the oil filter wrench I give it about a 1/4 of a turn which is like 10 inch/lb of torque?

Unless somebody can see why its not necessary or can show proof that hand tight is all that is needed then I'll continue doing it to be safe. :)

yeah thats what i did, i got two 2x4 blocks and drove onto those and it lifted my bumper up enough to clear the jacks. when i tried it without those, my bumper kept hitting the jackstand and pushing them along.

I can't tell why or give verifiable proof, but i have never had a problem in ten years with a filter leaking, being only hand tight i mean, i bet fritz knows

hmmmm.... I never really thought of that myself.
I just hand tight it because it's a known fact that people pass around.
Especially considering that you'll have a hard time taking it off if you tighten it with a wrench.

My cousin, who owns his own shop, (yes, he's my favorite cousin) :D :D :D...... has a specialized wrench because when you use it, it completely crushes the oil filter!!!!!!!!
Of course, oil pours out like mad, but it's only used when nothing else works.

You're suppose to hand tighten everything almost.
The oil filter and the oil drain nut (with a small turn of a wrench)
Anything MORE and you might strip the threads

It's not so bad stripping the threads where the oil drain bolt is because you simply replace the oil pan.
I've done that twice now :) My oil pan is actually from a 5th gen Accord from a junk yard When I first bought the car, the threads were already pre-stripped. (of course, I was no informed about this when buying the car) :mad:
The other time was because when we fixed the problem with a new oil pan, we didn't use the correct bolt. OOPS.

Anyways..........to my point........ (sorry for running off on a tangent)
It's ok to strip the threads on your oilpan because you can just replace it.
However......if you strip the threads where you oil filter is........UM...let me say that you're SCREWED!!! :(

10-30 come on read your god dam manual. 10 30 is for the Ludes the s2000's. The real motors!! We at Honda do sell a Oil filter wrench for you do it at home boys around 15 bucks.

Yes do put the oil filter on by hand :smoka: Makes it easier to take off when doing your oil change again the next 3000 miles :smoka:

P.S Don't forget your gas cap at the Gas station. will cost yeah around 8 bucks to get another >>>>>LOL:finger:
