86 Taurus transmission swap

I have a 1986 Taurus 4 cylinder with a ATX transmission. Is it possible for me to replace it with an AXOD transmission from a 1994? I have all the parts off the 94 but not sure if this is possible or worth the effort.

I'd vote for "Not worth the effort".

It may be the AXOD-E, where the -E means "electronic". You'd have to swap over the computer and wiring. Also, the AXOD series had some major, and expensive, reliability problems.

Why are you wanting to swap tranny's? Is the ATX shot, or do you just want another gear? If you're after another gear, swap to the manual 5-speed, which was an option in your car with the 2.5L engine. The easiest thing would be to find a donor car in a junkyard, somewhere. It would then be a straight bolt-on job.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I bought the two Taurus's at a lien sale. The 86 is in beautiful condition, low miles, but the trans is shot. The 94 has a great 3.0 and a somewhat new AXOD in it, but the guy slammed a pole on the drivers side. I do mean Slammed. All together I have about $200 invested between the two cars. I know I can recoup most my money by just junking the two cars, but it seems a shame to junk the 86. I don't want to put much money into the car and I don't want to rip the thing apart to find out it's not going to be compatible. Thanks for the input Dan. I'm kind of leaning that way...
