front axle - not disengaging

The front axel has a vacuum assest lever that slides a sleve over the threaded axle. For some reason my front axle will not disengage. I have tested the vacuum motor and it works fine. It appears that the vacuum switches from one side to the other on the vacuum motor. For me to get the front axel to disengage a moved the two line vacuum hose to the other port. Does anybody know why this is happening? Thanks

Just buy a manual engagement coversion and get rid of that unreliable vacuum system.

Instead of buying one, you can make your own for real cheap!
Here is a great write-up on how it's done: http://home.earthlink.net/~stevenschreiber/cabledis.htm
