ok i own a 99 chevy prizm and as most of u know it has the same engine as the corolla of that year, so question...i ran my car which is auto at the track last friday and was terrified at my et slip, i ran anywhere from 18.4 and up, and after the third run my engine was making like a metal on metal sound when i would rev it and the check engine light came on but i knew it couldnt be oil cause i put more in right before i went, so i put more in and the noise stoped and so did the CE light, so i ran again and still 18.6 is this normal, thats really slow and shitty i want speed and i dont think its gonna come from that motor/tranny, also i only dynoed at fricken 65 wheel HP HAHAHAHA thats so weak, so somone get back to me is my engine fucked or is it just that slow???

Yeah I feel your pain I own a 1985 Corolla GTS hatch and it ran a 17.9 haha it's funny because eo many people think they are lightning fast. I think you have the distant relitive motor so to speak of the late model 4ag (4agule) wich has smaller intake ports wich actually flow much better than earlier models It came in the AE92 front wheel drive Trueno/ Levin the usa GTS had a half red top that is actually a older tvis (big port) motor with better internals and a 7 rib block. But your engine is called the 4afe I think I know for shure that it is single overhead cam, I have heard of people converting to a twin cam but I would imagine it is not easily done and could be expinsive.

4afe ahh..
atleast from 1990-now they are dohc but use a small cam angle making people think the head is small and sohc, the cam belt only drives the intake cam the exhust cam is run off a gear from the intake. If you want to make the car faster move up to a 4age or gze, if you want the current engine to run better just do the normal headers, exhust, filter
they are not to bad down low, but lack the revs

You have a 1ZZFE without VVTi..should be making 120hp at 5500rpm and 120-122ft-lb torque at 4400rpm. I ran a 16.469 my first night at the track..that's with a '98 Corolla, ELP cold air intake, 2.25" catback/straight-thru muffler, Tokico struts and Intrax springs..and a tired clutch. Sounds to me like something's really messed up with your engine..

maybe you guys aren't race drivers. Granny shifting and personally automatic transmission is not race material. Added to this weather conditions, tires, shape of the car, etc.... affects a car performance. It take alot of money to get a low time 10 - 14 seconds. The 4afe is a poor choice for racing a big corolla even with filter, exhaust and the 4afe is not high rev engine adding header will kill low-end torque making car less responsive.
1zzfe, vvti are not so popular but for a 120 hp car running 16.465 is not so bad. A stock type-R runs 15+ will a lot more hp and remember muffler and suspension don't make hp

Going from a very restrictive stock muffler to a straight-through muffler (with 2 1/4" piping vs 1 7/8" stock) definitely helps..the engine breathes better. Obviously suspension doesn't increase power, but it's stiffer..with a FWD car, that means the front end isn't lifting (back end dropping) as much on launch, which may keep more weight on the drive wheels. Also, Corollas only weigh about 2400lb -- they're most definitely not a big car.
The 1ZZFE with VVTi is what's used in 2000+ Celica GTs, btw..different intake manifold and ECU, but the same engine.
The 4afe is relatively easy to turbocharge..I know two people in Florida running 15-20psi..with *automatic* transmissions. I guarantee they're a lot faster than your average car.

O.K,
so if you are right then my statement about being a poor race drive is correct. Let men explain my shelf better. Exhaust system helps the car to breath better and increase combustion, not just a straight-through muffler.
Secondly you are correct about the function of suspension for a good launch, but if your car is under power or an automatic it doesn't change much. Beside it is the design of the suspension system which enable to be a good drag car or a good handling (cornering) car.
The 1zzfe with vvti 2000 celica looks real good and works prettywell, but to be honest they aren't to big on performance. according to motor trend this cars were design to target more mature (older) drive who like sportty looking cars and is not all that on performance. The only ture performance celica is the GT-4 and it those not carry a 1zzfe, thats a fact.
finally 1/4 mile racing is about power to weight ratio. the 4afe push out about 90 hp (correct me if I'm wrong could be less to) a corolla weight is adout 2600 + I would say that is alot of weight for a 90 hp car, wouldn't you? It is better to buy a 4age that runs 15, 16+ than to turbo charge a 4afe to run the same time the rest of the car would be design to handle the hp (suspension, etc....
Do any one has a 4afe that run more than 14 in a quarter?

The 1zz wasn't around when Toyota made the GT4s..
Going from stock suspension to Tokico struts with Intrax springs definitely reduced my car's up/down motion in shifting and braking..I haven't ran at the track with stock suspension, so I can't say if it did anything to my time.
A turbocharged 4afe will stomp all over an otherwise stock 4age..the ae86 Corollas came with 4ages -- IIRC, they're usually running 16-17 seconds in the quarter mile. Autox, on the other hand.. :p
Spool has a turbo kit for 1zzfe Corollas..can run up to 9psi on the stock engine, which translates into 70-90hp. If I had 200hp in my 2414lb car (curb weight for '98 Corolla CE), it would most definitely *not* be a 16 second car. :)
Ask Tazito over at www.vvti.net what he runs -- not sure if he's ran yet, but I'm sure his turbocharged 4afe can hold its own :)
..what is 'granny shifting'..?

A 4AFE is made for economy why the hell would you bother turboing it? Apart from seeing how long it takes for weak rods, crank to brake? ae86's are old... but if you put a turbo on one of them they will way out crank the 4afe... look at the head design's!! there is plenty of ae86's runing 13's 1/4's over here, and factory 4age's in 90's cars are pulling 15's

im probably turbocharging my 4AFE soon. It beats buying an old 4AGE motor that'll last like another year. They have TSI Garrett turbos at turbo-kits.com im pretty sure for the 4AFE, but they're expensive.

Pulling consistant low 14s with my 4AGE Rolla. Kerb weight is 870kg and it has race cams, extractors, 2.5" pipes, 3" muffler, high flow cat, CAI airbox, shaved head, port and polish and retuned ECU.
