I am looking into an 86 rx-7 with 70k original miles with complete receipt history. The owner wants $1000 for it. I am going to look at it soon. This sounds like a good deal to me if the condition is right considering they book for $1600 with no options (non-turbo) How is the reliability of the 86 rx-7s. Will they go 150k plus miles with little maintenance?

I wouldn't say 150k.Their is some cases were people have pulled off 170k with a turbo, which creates more wear. You might make to 150k without a rebuild,175k,or maybe just 100k.It really depends on how the car was driven/taken care of.You' can expect a rebuild in another 40k.If you have an extra $1200,keep it around,or just rebuild the engine.

I have had a 86 RX7 for the past 10 years, mine has 250, 000 miles on it, it leaks oil, burns oil, and smokes at high RPM, I drive it every day. Sounds good huh, well if you don't know anything about them, don't buy one. If you don't do your own work, you will be stuck taking it to the dealer for work because no one else will work on them, and if they do, they don't know what the heck they are doing. I have replaced almost everything on my car, parts are top $$, example are mufflers, $600 for a pair, Oil Cooling lines, $200. This does not include labor. I love my car, but would not wish it on someone who actually paid to fix it. Also, buying used RX7's is very risky, the owner usually knows if it's messed up and about to die, thats when they try to unload them. The RX7 will actually still run with a bad rotar on half the engine gone bad. If you smell any gas, stay away, if it smokes at Higher rpm, stay away, look for oil leaks, stay away. Also check the oil pressure at Idle, if thats low stay away. If the exaust is bad and you need stste inspections to drive it, keep in mind the $$$ of the stainless exaust system.
Take these as warnings, although I really do like the car

Easy answer...no.
The FC3S RX-7 is no Honda, you have to keep it up to have it stay reliable.

However, an 86 with 70,000 orginal miles for $1000?
Sounds like something is wrong with it.
I paid $2000 for my 140,000 mile 87 Turbo II, and I had to do alot of work just get it street legal.

Let us know.
