1995 Taurus Transmission Fix

I have a '95 Taurus sedan with 145K miles....trans was leaking
BADLY and has been determined that it needs new front tranny seal...
anyone have an idea how much this might cost?

OUCH... Be prepared to spend a couple of grand. Sorry guy. They've got to pull the trans out and separate it from the engine.

Since the R and R is so expensive, you may be ahead in the long run to have them overhaul the thing while it's out.

Any chance you have the time, place and friends to help you do this one yourself?

No such luck -- have the place and the mechanic friend, but
no tools to do the job.

Did you have the seal fixed? If not consider that buying the tools is a heck of a lot cheaper than having it done. A couple hundred in hand tools and rent an engine hoist or buy one and sell it when you're done!

Your full rebiuld kit alone in Canada is 500 dollars, My trany is bad bad done 170k miles (265k km) rebiuld is 1700 dollars and a used is 700 dollars. Sounds like when trany problem is here it is big money and lots of work any way you look at it. I have a 96 Sable good luck

I have a suggestion. Park the car over a piece of plywood with some "oil dry" sprinkled liberally over it. Change the oil dry every once-in-a-while. Add trans oil when needed and keep 3 or 4 qts. in the trunk - just in case you forget to check it often enough.

Meanwhile - save the $2000. Get your car in shape to sell (clean it up and such) and then sell it. Add the proceeds to the $2000 you saved and you will have nearly enough to buy a 98 Taurus. Unless you can fix the old car yourself, it is debatable if the car is worth the expense.
