Dirty brown smoke???

Alright folks, I am still breaking my engine in. It was running funny, so I put some fuel injector cleaner in it with some more gas, and I let it run for awhile. I took it up and down the street a couple of times til it was warmed up good. Then I parked it and let it run. It started smoking. I got scared and thought that the head was blown again, but it slowed after about 5-6 minutes. Then as I was hitting the gas, it would release brown smoke. It looks kinda like mud. Anyone know what this could be?

I would just check the oil and coolant to make sure one of those isn't being burnt, and just let it run, see if it stops. If the car has been sitting for a long time, you could have bad gas, a dirty filter or maybe there is crap in the exhaust system, like alot of rust, which could be blowing out with the exhaust gasses.

I am about to go out and check the antifreeze and see if there's anything in it. i had to let it cool down first. So you don't think its harming anything if I let it run?

It's hard to say if its harming anything, i am not a mechanic, but if it has oil, and coolant, it should be able to run just fine, the fuel has a filter, as well as air, so no chunks of anything can really get into the cylinders. I would spend a minute looking at the exhaust pipe, maybe rust had formed in there, and its being blown out. Rust has sort of a brown/red color...

yeah that's the color of it. I think that it is the old muffler. I am changing that soon though.

In which case, just drive it until you replace the muffler. That rust will all blow out sometime....

an exaust systems flush isn't a bad idea, some tube or another was clogged in my tempo because i had a vacume seal break off, by the end barely anything was comin out my muffler, midas cleaned all that shit out and my car ran better than ever for 100 bucks
never hurts to take it to a pro for an inspection, just be careful who you trust

I plan on taking it to a professional. I need to put my new exhaust on anyways. I am scared to drive it because I have no tag yet. If I get insurance, does anyone know if I can or how long I can drive it without a tag? I've had the car for about 9 months but I haven't signed/dated the title. I am just trying to figure out how I am going to get this stuff done (emissions, getting it to a shop, etc) without paying for towing everytime, because it is expensive.

I know when I buy a car and am in a situation like that, I just sign the title, maybe date it, and i have the bill of sale (I always get one, even just a hand-written note from the previous owner). If a cop pulls you over, say that hey, i just bought this, and am taking it to _______ to get ______ done so it will pass emissions so i can get a plate. Generally, If you're not traveling far, i doubt you'd have any problem.

And every state is different on this, but where i lived, you had 3 days after purchase to have the car insured (in case you bought it on the weekend)
