stall problem in 88 civic lx

my car sometimes stalls right after starting or during early acceleration. it happens five/six times on average every month. i lived in phoenix arizona for three years. i noticed then that the problem occurred more frequently during the triple digit summer days than relatively much cooler winter or spring times. does anybody know if this is due to bad distributor. my battery, alternator are fine. i would appreciate the help.
if its the distributor, will i be able to change it myself.

when u say stall, do u mean when u go to push the gas it kinda "stutters" and then will go? or do u mean when u start the car it has trouble turning over?
