ok I found this 91 rx-7 non-turbo 5spd 98k miles for $2500 good body and sound engine, I'm really interested in it, but I don't know a whole lot about the car, I know the basic stuff though cuz my cousin has one, mostly I'm into the 91-93 nissan 240sx so I'm wondering since the cars seem to be very similar besides the engine would companies that make good suspension parts for a 240 be good for the rx-7 too?

someone just fill me in on a few things I should know before buying one and a few things to look for damage wise or engine problems and all that

also what kind of 0-60 and 1/4 mile times could be expected?

how bad is handling in snow and ice? would a couple sand bags help out with staying straight?

what is the engine code for the 89-92? and they are the fc3s right?

In every aspect the RX-7 you are looking at is far superior to the 240.. the 240 is a toy pedal car reletive to the RX-7. Sure alot of aftermarket suspension parts manaufactures have parts availible for both the 240 and the RX-7. But why? the 240 is far inferior, so why throw inferiour parts on the RX-7. when you are ready to actually mod your RX-7's suspension, let me know. We can walk through many different suspension set-ups... depending on what you want the car to do and what budget you want to play with.

the engine code for ALL 2nd gen RX-7's is 13B (for n/A) and 13BT (obviously for the Turbo II.

the FC is the chassis designation of the 2nd gen for 86-91.. you may also hear series numbers, such as series 4 (IV etc) which would be the 86-88 and the series 5 would be like yours, the later models of the 2nd gen "FC"

to be honest, the RX-7 is actually better in the snow than the 240. 240's are better drift cars because their F/R weight balance sucks when compared to the RX-7... the 240 is much heavier up front... where as the "FC" Chassis is right on 50/50 weight distribution.. either way, i would find a set of junk 15" wheels and buy a 195/60R-15" snow tire such as a bridgestone Blizzack.. or Mich Alpine.

also, what is the trim level of your car? I would imagine that it is a GTU, or base model, which should have the LSD, some extra weight in the back would be ok, if that is your drive style.. personally, i like it to slide around a little bit because the car is more predictable, and less likely to snap.. which is rare for an RX-7

as far as checking the car out to make sure it is a good specimen.. i would reccommend that you check out www.teamfc3s.org look at their FAQ's... it will save me hours of typing.

I don't want to go with coilovers cuz I'm cheap and not gonna be doing any autox or drift comps anytime soon, just like shocks and strut towers and springs

then I wanna add intake and exhaust to get a small power gain and to free up the engine a little, and I'm basically clueless on what can be done to the engine and anything to improve performance, anything I can do to make it faster without turbo? I'm not looking for any super car out of the rx-7, just quick acceleration and good handling, plus it is going to be an everyday driver

For intake, simply replace the filter with a panel filter like an ACCEL cool blue or K&N.

don't take this any further until you have a different ported engine installed..

For exhaust, Racing beat makes the best header as well as complete exhaust systems.. somewhat on the pricey side, but by far the best one out there.. I am not sure where you live, but if close i could help you fabricate exhaust. this is really where you'll get power from your stock engine..

other things to remember... Pineapple racing has a nice 6-port replacement sleeve that is much much better than stock..

Do you "need" to have emmissions devices installed on your car in your state/area? if not there are alot of little things that you can remove/replace... even ways to still keep the car emmissions legal, (except in california) and not have alot of those ancilary parts.

For suspension on a budget, how about some Tokico adjustibles and eibach springs?

for sway bars... racing beat, or suspension techniques.

again we an go into this further down the road... for now, get the car...
