new guy with some ????

Im new to the forum and i am looking at an 89 240sx se hatchback, 5 speed, with only 72,000 miles, stored winters, and owned by a nissan tech. How much should i expect to pay and what is the reliability of this particular year. Any big problem areas? I have checked blue book and edmunds values and found it to be valued at $1800- 2700, depending on options which i dont know all of yet. Help me out here and let me know if this is a good or great vehicle. My other option would be a more expensive higher milage toyota mr2 n/a, just to add the comparisson. Thanks a lot.

Well, personally I would get a Nissan over a Toyota any day. But, its all up to you really and how much you are willing to spend. If it were up to me I would get a newer twin cam. But still an 89' would be a very reliable daily driver, with lots of room for improvements... Not sure what information you are looking for...It all depends on what you wanna do. You can do your own research as well, and check the FAQ. There is another post about mileage on 240's on this forum right now...

what exactly are the differences in the 89 from the other first gens. Specifically engine, exterior, interior, thanks. and also is that price reasonable?

89-90 shared the same bumper and SOHC 142hp KA24E
91-94 shared the same bumper and DOHC 155hp KA24DE ( I may be off on the HP by a couple)

I like the MR2 styling better than the S13 personally. Toyota has excellent build quality. Can't go wrong with either. Do you plan on tottign more than 1 other person around with you?? if so, MR2 isnt for you

mr2s are pretty freakin tight, even N/A ones. one of the only cars in my price range that i wish i had over my s13. are they as hard to work on as i've heard?

the n/a mr2s are low maintenance cars if they have been taken care of. The issue with the mr2s is its hard to find one with less than 100k miles or even 120k miles for a good price. My conflict is this: the 240 im looking at has only 72000 miles and is much much cheaper than an mr2 which would most likely have around 110k-120k miles and be around $3500- $4000. Its hard to find one that someone will sell at blue book value. I realize both the 240 and mr2 are very reliable. I do plan swapping engines someday if i get either one so it comes down to money and the difficulty of the swap. I do like the mr2 looks a little better but as i said it all comes down to money and most of all which one is more fun to drive in its stock form.

besides the probs mentioned they are very reliable.... in the fact that they always start and engine lasts a LONG time...... 250k+mi

not really, i work on my mr2 all the time. there are some simple things that are a little harder to work on than other cars, like changing the alternator, its located in a hard to get area, with little room. mr2s are harder to find than the 240sx too. if you re going to get an mr2, i would recommend getting a sun roof, or hard top. i have a t-top, but now i want the other two since its a little lighter, and stiffer, plus i think it looks better. for the years i would go for the 93-95, cause they lengthened the rear suspension arms to help it handle better, with better wheels. if you get a 91-92, you can still change the rear arms to 93+ spec. if you look around hard enough you can find mr2s for cheap, even the turbos. i know people running 300whp with near 200k on their turbo motor, with stock internals. if you want to know more, go to the toyota mr2 section in this forum.
