Here is my story.

I bought a d16y8 (96-00 Ex) cylinder head.

I just finished taking it apart, and found the camshaft bearings to have a good amount of scratches on them. I can feel the scratches if I run my finger nail over them.

The place on the head where the cam bearings touch seem to be scratched much less.

I have no reference to what the bearings should look like.....is that too much damage?

I can post pics if anyone would like to see what I am talking about.

I am getting the runout on the bearings checked soon, and the lobes are still in good shape.

One more thing, I did find some metal shavings in the oil passage of the rocker shafts.

Mtal shavings aren't good, replace the bearings.

HXMan- to back up what has been said here and on other websites, I would be extra cautious in assembling this motor with the current parts. Marks in bearings are actualy quite common, but if there is any scoring (aka a noticable groove in the load bearing surface), replace them immediately. Although marks can be found on almost any bearing in an engine with miles on it (after all, the bearings are there for a reason), scoring indicates unusually harsh circumstances for the parts surrounding this area. The metal shavings are your best clue that the head didn't have enough clean oil flowing to it to remain healthy, so clean out the salvagable parts VERY well and replace anything that's not in "like new" condition. Doing so will ensure a long and happy life with your motor. Hope this helps, peace.

I am working on buying another head off someone on ebay...only 5k miles and the guy claims no damage at all.

I have a feeling that is the best route to go, a dealership will charge me way to much for the new parts I need.

Damaged Parts list:

1. Cam, Honda price? I bet $250+! :eek:
2. Intake and Exhuast rocker shafts, $75 a piece??!! :bloated:
3. Possibily some rockers.
4. Possibly the head too.

Man, I feel pretty bad with the luck you have been having with your car - i.e. the absolute pits. Well good luck with your rebuild of the head. I hope your luck improves. And let me know in time if you want a crack at salvaging my B18C stuff once it comes out. Later boss.

Cam from honda: $277 :eek:
Intake rocker shaft: $85
Exhuast rocker shaft: $55

:mad: Screw getting those parts from honda. The Ebay head is up to about $200, but still much cheaper.

You know what really sucks now?! One of my best friends who owned a hooked up 94 Civic Ex bought a 98 Eclipse GST yesterday. It only has 28,000 miles, and for what he spent his car will be near the price of my car with mods. And he will be kickin my ass all over the place!

Man that sucks. I understand, that sucks about the inequalities in performance per dollar. One thing (and one of the only things) that pisses me off about "the Honda way."
