2001 Service engine light

Keep getting the service engine light after 25 miles. Have replaced a vent solenoid and the gas cap. Dealer cannot figure it out. Any ideas.\

Code has to do with the fuel system

If you can be more specific with the code, I'll try to help.

The dealer did not tell me the code but he said it had to do with the evaporate system, the vent solenoid they replaced was right above the gas tank.

Unfortunatly there are about 6 or 7 codes dealing with the evaporative emissions system.
To run most of the evap tests, the fuel level must be between 1/4 and 3/4 and there are some other parameters that must be met.
Knowing if it was a control code or a leak code would be very helpful.

I will check with the dealer and let you know!

I talked to the dealer today and they said it comes up with a PE-440 code. He said something about trying to replace a cannister next.

The P0440 code is for a "gross" leak in the Evap system...pretty much this is the "gas cap code"
but it is also caused by other failed componants that can cause a large leak.
Ask them if they are using the J41413 Evap Presure/Purge diagnostic station (they will know it as the "smoke machine")
This machine injects a chemical smoke into the gas tank and evap system and helps pinpoint leaks.
With a P0440, it shouldn't be that hard to find a leak.
Using the Smoke machine and running the "Service Bay Test" with the Tech 2, there is no reason why the problem isn't fixed by now.

Oh yea...some of the places I would look for a leak would be the tank seal, hoses to the vent and purge solenoids and make sure the FTP sensor is reading properly.

The service manager told me he did the smoke test twice and could not find a leak. This time they dropped the tank and tried the test. No leak at the tank but they found a small one on a cannister, between the vent solenoid and the tank, they are replacing that tomorrow.
He says a lot of the problem is the tolerance is so low that the computer kicks out the 440 code on even the slightest of leaks.
Said he looks for GM to upgrade this and move the tolerance up.

Have them install the latest and greatest calibrations into your PCM...the upgrade may already be there, sometimes they upgrade calibrations and don't sent out TSB's on them.
