Best AE86 Kit?

Hi there,

I'm from Portugal, Europe (for the one's that don't know).

I have 2 questions:

1 - What's the best AE86 (Trueno) 1:24 Kit? I really like the one from Initial D (Fujimi), but i'm afraid the quality don't deserve the money. Tell me what you think, please.

2 - How the guys from HLJ behave? I mean, time they need to send the stuff (to Europe), etc etc... Say from your own experiences.

Thanks!

1) If you want the 3-Door version, go for the Tohge series model, the Initial D one just comes w/ extra seats, muffler, intercooler, steering wheel & various added decals. i.e. Akina Speed Stars, RedSuns.
From what I know right now, either way you'll end up with a Zenki (early) model body even though the Tohge one has the Kouki model displayed on the box on both of these kits.
Here are the models prices from the top of my head:
Inch Up Zenki (Early) Toyota Trueno AE86 - 1000 yen
Tohge Kouku/Zenki (Who knows?) Trueno - 1000 yen
Initial D Zenki Trueno AE86 - 1800 yen
Other 'racing' ones i.e. Alpha, O.K. Racing, etc. - 1800 yen
To me, your best bet will have to be the Tohge model!

But if you want the 2-Door model, you get to pick between the Kouki and Zenki models for 1800 yen a piece.

2) I've dealt with HLJ, but I'm in the U.S. and don't know about the way they ship to other countries but I think in Canada the boxes have to go through customs (what a bummer)!

Using HLJ, shipping to the UK has always been 7-12 days using the SAL shipping option.

I've just got a toghe levin... how do I tell if it's zenki or kouki? :)

btw the lip which came with it fits awfully, the clear headlight parts has a fair bit of thick flash on it, and the body is only so so. Still, it was cheap :)

Welcome,

HLJ is a good choose... if you use SAL option (economic version) they shipping to Portugal in 15 days.

Cheers

It's good to see people from Portugal in here!

Anyway, from what I learned here, HLJ has a good service as long as I use the SAL option. 15 days is about the right time for a package trips around half the world. :P

But what the the other cost, and i'm asking about customs in here... Is it worth sending one pckage, pay the cost of it and pay the triple of the price in SAL and customs??

Unfortenely, that's the only chance for me to get me a AE86... Hate the Portuguese importers... GRRRRR. Do you believe that they didn't import the new Tamiya Skyline? Stupid Assholes!

I'm not sure about portugal taxes, but for me in the UK, importing from HLJ is always cheaper :)

Import tax will maybe be 25% extra at most.. I can't see it bieng much higher. A web search in your language should be able to find the figures you're after.

Hey KenshinPT (sou de Lisboa) ;)

The AE86 is one of my ultimate goal bodies to built a 1/24 scale slotcar drifter.
Maybe you're interested about my latest project: - Custom 1/24 scale downhill mountain pass slotcar race track for drifting (imitando as estradas japs onde eles correm).
As for the kits I think the Fujimi AE86's aren't that bad in detail if you're interested in making your own details (I love budgets) ;)
