I'm amazed at the hilariousness of the "experts" at supercars.net. I go on there occasionally for the rumors, news, and pictures. But I can't believe how badly people embarrass themselves on there.
And that's Mr. Selldorff's LM - not Turner's, ;)

The worst part, is he posted a link to the Caption Contest which clearly states that you can win a ride in the other car, and he was still convinced that Turner Motorsports had converted their car into an LM. :screwy:
I love the false info I find around the web about the F1s. It can be almost comical at times. I often want to reply to the threads I see and correct every piece of inaccurate info, but I just don't have the time. Let people believe there are only 6 McLaren's in the US, or that all the cars that are here only have one seat and ugly bumpers. :D

i dont know the name of the owner, thats why i said
"Turner's" as in "the one from Turner Motorsports."
==========================================
also what might seem as comically incorrect info to us, is not the same for others. we r kind of "McLaren Geeks" like the sterotypical chess players and Star Trek fans. other auto-enthusiasts might not know as much as we about this specific car, but we might not know as much as they do about the popular Pacific imports or big-block American Domestics.
though of course, there is the occasional idiot that is completely wrong or very misinformed to the point that a false statement about the McLarens is the truth to them and they persist on it. thats just very irritating even when the subject is not about the F1.

This was a pretty good show. Lots of classic BMWs and a few trick new ones. It was also one of the first times that the LM was out for a public showing.
The first thing I said to one of the hosts of the event was about the urinals. But this wasn't a proper photoshoot anyway.
What was amazing to me as I walked around during the day was how many people weren't sure or flat-out didn't know what it was. I heard that the car was a Delorean, someone was adamant that it was a Lotus, and a few thought it was a kit car. But that was nothing compared to the people who made the comments about the car's styling and add-on aerodynamics. There were quite a few people who called the car "ricey". I couldn't believe it... do they not remember that this car won Le Mans?

cuz it never did...but i know what u mean about Le Mans.
also i had some experience with people that didnt know what it was. the most frequent answer: Lamborghini. however, not too many people that like cars are car enthusiasts, so they probably would call most things "Lamborghinis"
so which one are you?

Drew,
Dont know if you know me but Im David Habel, Ali's nephew. I believe I met you 3 years ago or so at Mid Ohio. Anyways, I worked with the race team for 4 or 5 races this year. At Lime Rock when Frank brought 007 it was amazing how stupid some people were. I heard a few comments about rice or whatever, and of course a lot of people didnt know what it was. By far the worst was a chic who basically sat on the front fender while having a pic taken. Literally the whole crew saw her, but it took us like 5 secs to say anything cus we couldnt believe she was doing it. Because of her, at the Sunday car show Graham and I had to stand by the car just to make sure people werent retarded.
The other funny thing about that weekend was it was shitty weather and no one could believe he had the car out. Anyways, thought id say hi.

And here I am, I dream about just being able to see this car in real life cuz there is no way in hell I can ever afford one. I just want to look at it, and then there are those Fuc#ing idiots who got to see this car.....and called this car "Ricey"...WTF!!!!!!
If I was near a person who called this car "Ricey" I would've smacked the shit out of them.....and told them to leave before something else happens to them.
I JUST WANT TO LOOK AT THE CAR....BUT NOTHING EVER COMES TO SACRAMENTO....SORRY ASS CITY!!!!

I think the Turner Motorsports crew should take a few copies of the 1996 CAR Magazine article, where Andy Wallace shattered the existing 0-100-0 acceleration test at the wheel of XP1 LM, with them everywhere they go. Then people might get a better idea of the potential of the car.

I think about half of the regular posters here have seen at least one F1. There are no actual owners that participate here unless they are hiding their identities. You may be thinking that drewwtms is an owner, but I think you need to read the posts on the 2nd & 3rd pages of the "New Toy (literally)" thread to get a better idea of his connection to the actual owner of those cars.
We have about 10 McLarens in California, with the largest cluster being right near you in the cities of Woodside, and Los Gatos and the surrounding area. A few of the cars even see some time on the street up there including Larry Ellison's, Larry Blair's, and Seth Neiman's so your chances of seeing one are better than most people's.
Down here near LA there are approximately 3 cars, possibly a 4th. Jay Leno has one of them, another (the F1 road car I saw) belongs to Elon Musk, and a third car belongs to Peter Manelis though his car has only been seen in the Newport Beach/Laguna Beach areas. The fourth car belongs to Wyclef Jean - the Fugees rapper turned producer - but I believe his car stays on the East Coast. Also Ralph Lauren is an owner of two F1's and I'm sure he has homes here on the West Coast, but the one siting of his cars that I have found was in New York.
Anyway - your time will come I'm sure. If I ever find out about an F1 that is on display near you I'll be sure to post about it in here so keep looking.

That's easy. Either people own a McLaren or they don't. When Peloton asks people, they tell him if they don't own one. He then crosses them off his list. After he's asked everyone, he's left with a list of people who own one. You can do it too. ;)

Actually tvrfreak, that's the way it used to work. It was a pretty good system, but it was very time consuming.
Now what happens is when someone buys a McLaren, the McLaren Cars factory provides them with my email address and a quick form to fill out which includes their name, occupation, location and then the basic information about their F1 like color, chassis number and purchase price. (purchase price is an optional field)
It's a much better system now - it helps keep the records updated in a timely manner and avoids the confusion with all those 13 year olds out there who come on an internet forum and claim that they own three of them. :D
= = = = =
I assume you are detecting the sarcasm here NarutoRamen... ;)
Basically, I get my information the same way anyone else might - a lot of detective work, a lot of reading and searching for new info, a lot of emails to people who claim to have seen one or know an owner or to people who have posted photos, and then even more information is gained from participating here. I think this is the largest group of focused McLaren F1 enthusiasts on the web and we do a pretty good job of keeping up on the latest info. It's really surprising to a lot of people (owners included) just how much information is available on the web. I use a multitude of search engines to find the next piece of the puzzle and I cross reference it with info that I already know to be accurate. I would go so far as to call it a hobby.
One benefit that I have, is that I have been doing it for so long, and also sharing the info I have with others so often, that in some cases random people come directly to me to share what they have heard or what they know without me even asking. That's how I learned the owners name for the F1 which was displayed in the Shelton Ferrari showroom. I sometimes wish it always came easy like that, but I do enjoy the hunt. There's definitely a lot that remains a mystery too - but I'll keep pursuing the most accurate information available and hope for the best.

Good idea. But I think the noise the car makes is enough to silence - or at least drown out - any wanker who promotes the idea of a "ricey" McLaren. I say "noise" because it is so much more than just a sound. If need be I can always point to the wing's endplate that says "24 Heures Du Mans Winners 1995" or to the cam covers that say the same. Or I can point to the race history of McLaren that is on the passenger luggage compartment.
On second thought that would be cool to have. Good idea.
