Is it at all possible to work on a stock civic motor in preparation for a turbo, or are swaps ALWAYS necessary?

It depends on how much turbo you want to run. If you only want 5-7 psi, you should be ok with your motor. Anything more and it'd be more cost-efficient to swap in a b18b1 and turbo that.

An exhaust would help, and if you're getting a turbo kit, it probably requires a 2 1/2 inch exhaust anyways.

Well I had already planned to get an Exhuast, as well as an AEM intake. Also, Can someone give me a solid definition of a Cat-back Exhuast? Oh and also, by mods Im really asking what mods can be done under the hood, for reliablity reasons in preperation for the turbo.

A cat-back exhaust is what it sounds like, an exhaust that comes all the way back from the first catalytic converter.

If you want to boost the reliability of your engine, about the only things you can do are things like forged pistons, forged rods, and a forged crankshaft, and that will cost you a lot more than even a stage III turbo kit would.
