1993 Tahoe tailgate won't open

I have a 1993 S-10 Tahoe and suddenly the lower tailgate won't open. I have determined that the latch on the right side is opening, but not the latch on the left side. Probably one of pieces of stiff wire that operates the letch from the handle in the middle broke.

How do I get to this to fix it?

First off, it's the LATCH not the letch...

I pried away enough of the interior of the gate to get under it, and there are openings in the gate on each side near the actual latch part. I could get ahold of the actuator rod and pull, which opened the gate. Then I removed the interior piece and saw that the actuator rod went over a post with a groove, and there was a clip that held it on the post by going into the groove. The clip was shot. I happened to have a circlip handy, so I put the actuator rod over the post, put a smooth washer over that, then put a circlip over all that in the groove on the post. I made sure it was lubricated, then buttoned it all up - works great!
