98 blazer blinker problem

Just bought a 98 blazer. We get an annoying intermittent blinker noise (from the glove compartment area). It is the same sound as the turn signal makes, but it comes and goes without flashing outside lights or dashboard indicators -- just the sound of the blinker is made. Ideas for cause and repair?

Problem has been identified and repaired. Thankfully the dealer was willing to repair the problem that noisily made its appearance on the drive home. The problem was in the turn signal module inside the steering column. The lever seemed to be making contact nearly constantly causing the flasher to sound when in the neutral position. The fix was to replace the whole module -- $125 for module plus 2 hours labor. (Paid by dealor)
