A belt tensioner helps to set the tension & take up slack on a belt. They can be used on just about any belt that you find in a car (accessory drive & timing drive mostly). They are most commonly used on flat or serpentine belts, rather than v-belts (v-belts are usually pretensioned by adjustment of the position of an accessory). A common configuration of a belt tensioner is the spring-loaded idler pulley, with or without a lock-bolt. A belt tensioner should have as little effect as possible on the performance of the car. The primary effects that they will have come about if they aren't doing their job properly (belt oscillates or skips, belt comes off, etc). A secondary effect is due to the friction and inertia of the idler pulley, which saps power &/or acceleration from the engine (less friction & less inertia are better).

Are you looking for info on JUST the belt tensioners that one might find on a car engine?

There are also chain tensioners, all sorts of neat stuff.

Basically, a small spring holds tension against an idler pulley. The purpose of the idler pulley is to push against the belt and keep all slack out of the belt as it moves.

Hope this helps.

Try typing "Lovejoy" into the google search engine. They are a major manufacturer of tensionsers of all types.
