check engine soon

I purchased a ford mustang converitible (2000) 4 days ago, and are having a couple of issues with it.
First, I started hearing a loud screeching noise from the front right tire when I stepped on the brakes, and slow screech when I accellerated. The noise has stopped, and I'm thinking its new brake pads which are settling in. any opinions?
Secondly, I started receiving a "check engine soon" light today (Monday). I was reading that the sensors are sensitive to moisture, and since it rained today and last night, I'm wondering if that is what is causing this sudden change. Does this mean that after the sensors dry-up, the light will turn off?
Finally, I read that some guys are getting computer codes on the problems with their cars and taking them to auto zone for an analysis of the code. Where do you get the code from? I'm thinking I need to take it to a garage with a machine that can read the computer from the car.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

On the 99-up Mustang you can get the trip codes through the electronic odometer.
