So i was driving back to school from home today (300+ mi) and the check engine light comes on after about 150 miles of steady driving. I restart the engine and it goes away. Then at about 200 miles on the highway the car just loses power. The gas does nothing it's slowing down. the engine is still turning cause im going 85 and still in gear. I pull over and she doesnt start. So im in the middle of bum fuck amish country 5 miles from the nearest town with a car that doesnt turn. I can crank the starter, but it doesnt start. Battery is fine, lights are fine. I check the flashing light and its throwing me codes 1-Oxygen content, 8-TDC timing, and 16-Fuel Injector. So yeah, i called the cops to give me a ride to the next town for a tow, and he never showed, The dispatch lady said that the trooper guy told her that he was with me right then, but he mustve found somebody else...grrreat. so i had to hoof it. that sucked. Its dark, walkin on the side of the highway with semi trucks screaming past, blinded by the cars going the other way, 5 miles. Finally get to a hotel (no gas stations or service stations anywhere) and make a bunch of calls...I got some guy to tow it to a repair place that isnt open until tomorrow, but i told him that he should pick me up because the car is locked and the ebrake is up. He's like, no, i lift the car from the front, so, i can handle it.......sigh (dont think about his answer for more than 2 minutes or blood will squirt out of your ears). He rode out my ebrake all the way to the place. When i saw him one of the first things he said was, 'man, i just wanna get stoned.' Well, i grab my shit then i try to find a way back to school. turns out there is no train, and no taxi for 30-35 miles in either direction. FUCK. some cool guy from the hotel offered a ride, so that was cool, weird, cause there was nothin in it for him to drive me 35 miles out and then back.......=/ But i had to go, so i made it, and now my car is in the middle of hic land and im wondering if it's even worth it to have the car fixed there, go take a 3hr train, get a cab for 30 miles just for this car that i hate.

Well, the whole time im wondering, how the hell does my timing get fucked up? I never messed with it, and i wasnt doing anything to the engine at all.

any thoughts?


p.s. sorry ifa few of the words dont make sense, im tired as fuck.

Seems like your timing belt slipped off :/ Where in Chicago are you from?

Sounds like a timing belt broke/slipped.
By cranking on it after the fact, you may have bent some of the valves.
When my timing belt broke, I tried to start it again for about 2 seconds, and quit. I was lucky, and had no bent valves.
I hope you have that same luck, otherwise you'll need a head, gasket, the works. At the very least you'll need a timing belt...and it's good to do the water pump while you're in there...and replace the accessory belts...
And your experience with the towing company wasn't encouraging either.

I would also pull off your distributor cap and check the rotor Its not uncommon for the screw holding it in place to get loose and allow the rotor to come off. Your distributor could also be bad. I would check these and also pull off the upper timing belt cover and check if its broken do that first.

Yeah you probably broke the timing belt... depending on where the cam was... one of the few reasons I prefer DOHC to SOHC is IF the timing belt broke it's a little less likely to cause damage to valves/pistons.

I was goin snowboarding and was 2 hours outta town on the highway when all of a sudden my response from my gas didnt do anything and the car died...luckily it happened right when I was pulling into the parking lot lol...$400 later and tow and I got a new timing belt, damnit!! :mad: yea it sux

actually, a DOHC engine is MORE likely to cause valve/piston damage. the reason? A SOHC engine can only operate under one cam profile. this means that only during valve overlap (a very very miniscule amount of time during the combustion cycle) can both the intake and exhaust valves be open, meaning there 4x more chance of a piston hitting a valve. HOWEVER, on a DOHC engine, since both cams are independant, the timing belt could break, and one cam could spin a couple degrees and all four valves can be open, and not just under valve overlap, but they could actually be open all the way. especially on a b16a or any other DOHC VTEC engine with a very high lift cam, there is a very good chance your interference engine will live up to its name.

Oh man, I so feel you. Last winter I was gonna visit everyone before they fucking sent us to Iraq, and my car died in the middle of Kentucky. The guy told me so much shit, first he said the alternator, then the timing belt, and I ended up buying a new engine. Well, even though I didn't get to see my family, they never sent me to Iraq either. It's one of the worst feelings, being stranded with a broken Honda, in the middle of no where. Good thing a state trooper used to be in the Army too, so he was cool, and he told the guy who was towing it to get me a good price. That fuckface broke off all my sensors when he took the engine out, and after he took it out, he said he "couldn't put it back in because one of his guys quit" so here I was, a hundred miles away trying to get my shit fixed. Well, I wish you good luck with everything.

The big thing that bugs me is that i just had a $500 brake job done.....
I want to do this myself, but the car is 150+ miles away and i cant really tow it down here.
The fuckin assholes at the service place that its at are telling me that its 20 bucks a day to leave the car there. 5 days = 100 bucks, unless, of course, i let them work on it and run up charges. FUCK

Just thought I'd add to this.
Timing belt broke on my 90 Civic LX, and no interference.
I'm putting together an 86 Integra where the belt slipped (the belt's teeth around the crankshaft gear all pulled off) and even though the valve damage can't be seen by the naked eye, two cylinders have lost half of their compression.
So: belt slip in D15B (SOHC), valves OK.
Belt slip in D16A1 (DOHC), two valves bent.
