Need some technical help

I'm from singapore and i studying in a Polytechnic. I'm in engineering and now i've gotta do a project regarding Belt Tensioners.

Can anyone explain to me what it does and what it is. And where can i find more information regarding it.
How will different Belt TEnsioners affect different parts of a car?
