I've got a 94 civic DX with 158K
I've got an intermitent valve tap type sound all the time, but it is especially bad when it is cold. I am hoping there is excessive valve lash against the rocker arms, if it is not this, are there any other things you guys may have come across in this situation?
Broken valve spring maybe? What do you guys think?

i have a 94 ex with 165,000 on it that has a pretty decent amount of valve train noise as well... mainly at cold starts are you said
I've only had this car since July and got it from a dealerships crap auction... its seen better days but I have brought it somewhat back to life. if the valves have adjustment or something like that that would be great. i know, i need to get the shop manual for it but i havent had a chance... as of right now i don't even have the owners manual! :banghead:

i've never done a valve adjust ment before, but it seems simple enough. I plan on doing my timing belt this week, so while I have the valve cover off I am going to check this. I got to get the spec on that clearance though. I checked mitchells and did not find it, I have to check alldata at work for it. I need to get my hands on a factory manual. i've been to the website, but never seem to have time to download it.

Valve tap/tick solved!!! the valve adjustment is done, it was rather easy. I recommend doing it.

Yep that usually would fix it. While the valve cover most mechanics would have noticed any other problem that could cause a tick. Honda 4-banger should have the valves adjusted atleast every 30K miles. Always adjust when the engine is COLD, not even slightly warm. Make sure to replace the valve cover gasket & plug grommets. Honda's use solid lifters, reason for adjustments.
Your valve clearance should be listed on a sticker under-hood. Here's a link for the process.

Alldata is a good source, but not as good as the factory repair manual - paper edition.

i wish it were that easy on the B series. They are really deep down in there to where as the D series are really accesible.
